The sleek Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake

Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake

The newest five-door coupe.

Back in 2004, Mercedes-Benz created a new, stylish segment in the automotive world that has since been replicated by numerous other automakers – the four-door coupe. The CLS spawned a new, very popular niche in the automotive marketplace that it still holds a firm grip on with the second-generation model. Now, the new Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake is building on the success and innovative design of the original model with a new five-door coupe niche.

The new CLS Shooting Brake is a harmonious blend of performance, design, and practicality for those that want to drive something different than the traditional wagon, SUV, or crossover options. The Shooting Brake design of the coupe allows for between 590 and 1550 liters of luggage space even though the roof is low and curves towards the rear hatch. The luggage compartment comes standard with high-quality, hand-stitched carpeting, but can be optioned with a special designo wooden floor similar to that found on yachts. The American cherry tree wood features smoked oak and aluminum rails and is hand-laid and sanded for a smooth finish. The three rear seats in the rear car be folded down to provide even more luggage space should the need arise.

The interior of the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake will be available in five different interior color options, five trims, and three leather types along with three different woods to create a unique atmosphere. Piano lacquer trim elements complement the different wood finishes and can be optionally combined with exclusive porcelain elements.

The Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake was designed to continue the sleek, four-door coupe styling that made the original CLS incredibly popular. The roof was extended, but keeps a low overall height and swoops down as it approaches the rear creating a smooth, curved shape that retains a great deal of practicality and a low drag coefficient of just 0.29 Cd. Much of the coupe was made with lightweight aluminum including the doors, tailgate, hood, front fenders, supports, suspension, and engine to save weight for better overall efficiency. Mercedes-Benz has also fitted the CLS with new adaptive LED headlights for the first time ever. Each headlamp utilizes 71 LEDs that last up to five times longer than traditional xenon and use Adaptive Highbeam Assist to provide crystal clear illumination.

The new Mercedes-Benz CLS will be available with two different diesel engines paired with the seven-speed 7G-Tronic Plus automatic and ECO stop-start function for efficiency. A 2.1-liter inline-four diesel engine with 204 horsepower at 4,200 RPM and 369 lb-ft. of torque from just 1,600 to 1,800 RPM comes standard while a 3.0-liter diesel V-6 is optional with an output of 265 horsepower at 3,800 RPM and 457 lb-ft. from 1,600 to 2,400 RPM. The diesel-four is good for 53.3 mpg (EUR) and the V-6 can achieve 47.0 mpg (EUR) combined. The more powerful V-6 can accelerate to 62 mph in 6.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph. Both engines are combined with a standard air ride suspension that adjusts to changing road conditions and Mercedes-Benz’s electro-mechanical power steering that provides a good deal of feedback to the driver.

The new Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake will be available in the UK in November of 2012. Pricing and official specifications have not been released by Mercedes-Benz.
