The new Brabus SL R231 Tuning Program is one Sweet Convertible

Brabus SL R231

Its Grand Touring time!

The sixth-generation Mercedes-Benz SL builds on the heritage of one of the German automaker’s most prestigious grand touring models. The non-AMG models may not pack the same punch or striking aerodynamics as its performance-oriented siblings, but Brabus is looking to change that with their new R231 tuning program that improves the look and driving dynamics of the SL 500 and SL 350.

The new Brabus SL boasts a more powerful, AMG-rivaling upgraded 4.7-liter bi-turbo engine thanks to the Brabus B50 – 520 PowerXtra CGI plug-and-play kit. The unit alters the mapping of the fuel injection and ignition, and also increases the boost pressure supplied by the two turbochargers. The new B50 – 520 PowerXtra CGI R231 tuning kit works in conjunction with a new intercooler system to supply cooler air for increased performance, and a new stainless steel sport exhaust system with four chrome tailpipes to reduce backpressure.

After the upgrades, the 4.7-liter sends 520 hp (512 bhp) and 604 lb-ft. of torque to each of the rear wheels through a new limited-slip differential. This enables the roadster to accelerate to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 155, 172, or 186 mph when combined with the customizable Vmax control unit.

In order to accommodate for the improved performance and top speed capabilities, Brabus designed new exterior components for the R231 tuning program using a wind tunnel. The components are made from OEM quality, lightweight PUR plastics, and can be installed on Mercedes-Benz SL models with or without the AMG Sport package. The Brabus SL aerodynamic kit features a front fascia addition, side skirt extensions, a rear fascia with integrated exhaust outlets, trunk spoiler, and fender air vent inserts.

Even though the Mercedes-Benz SL is more of a grand touring roadster, Brabus worked to improve the overall driving dynamics of the sports car with new chassis upgrades. The factory wheels can be replaced with new in-house Monoblock wheels in Brabus Monoblock F, R, and Q designs with 18-, 19-, and 20-inch diameters. The featured wheels are installed in a 9J x 20 front and 9.5 J x 20 rear setup with 255/30 ZR 20 front and 295/25 ZR 20 high performance Pirelli, Yokohama, or Pirelli tires. The SL 350 models with the traditional steel suspension can be fitted with new sport springs developed in conjunction with Bilstein, while the ABC-equipped models can be modified with an electronic module that lowers the overall ride height by 25 mm for improved handling dynamics.

At the end of the day, the Brabus SL is still a luxury grand touring car, and the German company offers customers a number of options to enhance the styling for the interior. Both of the front seats including doors, arm rests, and other components can be covered in soft Mastik leather and alcantara, while the factory trim can be replaced with custom-colored carbon fiber or wood in a variety of finishes. New illuminated door entry sills greet passengers and a 200- or 225 mph speedometer can be installed.

The new Brabus SL R231 tuning program is currently available for the Mercedes-Benz roadster. Customers can order the program as an entire package or as individual upgrades for both SL 350 and SL 500 models with or without the AMG Sport package. Pricing has not been released.
