Twin-turbo V-10 madness.
The new SRT Viper had us drooling and moving our feet, pressing an imaginary throttle when it was introduced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It was that classic rear-wheel drive American powerhouse in a modern snake skin. Just as its starting to hit the market, the team at Hennessey Performance is getting involved. Their new project, the Hennessey Venom 1000 is a twin-turbocharged monster that breaks the 1,000 horsepower mark with ease.
The new naturally-aspirated 8.4-liter V-10 engine that comes stock in the new SRT Viper boasts a pretty substantial 640 bhp and 600 lb-ft. of torque, but that just wasn’t enough for Hennessey Performance. Their goal was more like 1,000 horsepower.
In order to achieve that, the Hennessey Venom 1000 was given a pair of precision ball bearing turbochargers with external wastegates, polished stainless steel inlets, and a front-mounted air-to-air intercooler with custom-tailored hoses. The exhaust system was completely revised to eliminate backpressure with new stainless steel turbo headers, downpipes, and three-inch exhaust. The 8.4-liter was revamped with forged aluminum pistons with a 9.2:1 compression ratio, forged steel rods and wrist pins, ARP 2000 rod bolts, thermal coated bearings, and a new fuel system. After the management system was retuned and recalibrated to compensate for the newly added boost pressure, the super car was tested on a dynometer and the road for 100 miles.
So what’s the result of all of this turbo madness? Each of the rear brakes are stomping down 1,120 horsepower at 6,200 RPM and 1,092 lb-ft. of torque at 4,200 RPM, sending the Hennessey Venom 1000 to 60 mph in just 2.7 seconds. The added power is also good for a quick 9.7 second ¼ mile at 152 mph with the optional drag radial tires.
As standard, the Hennessey Venom 1000 comes with a special shift knob, floor mats, dash plaques, and exterior badging to show off the 1,000 horsepower muscle. As an option, customers can choose from a variety of front and rear carbon fiber aerodynamics, interior upgrades, in-house monoblock wheels, a five-point racing harness, and fire extinguisher. In terms of performance, a Penske double-adjustable coilover suspension, rollbar system, and rear differential cooler can be installed to squeak out every bit of speed.
Hennessey Performance is currently offering the new Venom 1000 twin-turbo upgrade package for the new, fifth-generation SRT Viper model. Pricing and availability has not been announced.
