The new Porsche 991 911 GT3 Cup is ready to take over the Racetrack

Time for the 991 to grab the checkered flag.

Get ready, the most successful race car in the world is back and this time it’s all-new and designed around the Porsche 991 911 chassis. The new Porsche 991 GT3 Cup is the first race car based on the newest 911-generation model and is the racing version of the upcoming 991 911 GT3 road-going model. The German automaker has produced 2,395 911 GT3 Cups since 1998 and looks to build upon that number and the amount of victories it has achieved with the all new model.

Much of the new 991 GT3 Cup model sees improvement in virtually every aspect of the car. A 3.8-liter, naturally-aspirated flat-six engine sits at the rear of the race car and produces 460 horsepower (338 kW) at 7,500 RPM – ten more than the 997.2-generation GT3 Cup. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed dog-type gearbox developed by Porsche Motorsport and can be controlled by steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for the first time in a Porsche trophy car.

All of the aerodynamic downforce-inducing bodywork is back with the adjustable rear spoiler, front spoilers, splitters, and more, while both the front and rear fenders have been extended to accommodate the wider track and wheel setup.

Just about every aspect of the 991 GT3 Cup chassis was also improved upon from the wheels to the brakes. Center-locking race wheels developed by Porsche Motorsport provide lightweight and durable performance, and were given wider Michelin race slicks that are 2 cm wider at the front and 10 mm at the rear for a total of 27 cm front and 31 cm rear sizing for better traction. Stopping power is better than ever thanks to a new race braking system with slotted and inner-vented 380 mm steel brake discs that are clamped down on by aluminum six-piston fixed calipers at the front and four-piston at the rear.

“The new 911 GT3 Cup is much easier to drive at the limit,” said Porsche works driver Timo Bernhard, who was significantly involved in the development of the new vehicle. “The car is excellently balanced. The new axle geometry is enormously positive for the handling. Apart from that the new Cup 911 is great fun to drive.”

The development of the 991 GT3 Cup wasn’t just about improving performance, it was also centered around driver safety. The safety cage that protects the cockpit was redesigned for better roll and crash protection and incorporates a new rescue hatch on the roof for easier driver extraction and medical attention during an accident. A new racing seat is also featured and utilizes head and shoulder protection for driver safety, and can be adjusted using padding for different drivers.

The new Porsche 991 GT3 Cup model will be built in Stuttgart- Zuffenhausen on the same factory line as the road-going 991-generation 911 models. After assembly, the blank, white models are tested at the Motorsport Centre in Weissac by a professional driver before it is delivered to customers. The base price for the 911 GT3 Cup is 181,200 Euro (approx. 234,488 USD) plus country-specific tax.
