The Porsche Museum takes a look at the Legendary “Pink Pig”

A look at a one-of-a-kind Porsche racecar.

The Porsche 917 was one of the most iconic and successful race cars during its day. It set records, achieved numerous victories, and helped engineer technology that was later used in production Porsches. One of the most notable 917 racecars was the 917/20 “Pink Pig”.

The 917/20 “Pink Pig” was created in 1971 to compete in that year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. The car combined the high-speed of the “long tail” models with the precise handling of the “short tail” models and helped the German automaker study the aerodynamic properties that it was intending to use in Can-Am racing. The car got its “Pink Pig” nickname from the pink livery that was designed by artists at the Porsche Design studio, with cuts of meat spelled in German being featured throughout the body.

The “Pink Pig” did not finish the 1971 24 Hours of Le Mans, but will forever be remembered for its unique livery. Only one was made and it will continue to live in the Porsche Museum.
