To the relief of some and dismay of others, Bentley Motors confirms that it will proceed with the development of the Bentley SUV. The SUV will be made in Crewe and will go on sale in 2016. This vehicle will also be the fourth model line and join the Mulsanne, Continental and Flying Spur in the company’s stable. Bentley will invest more than £800 million in its headquarters at Crewe and the development of new models and create over 1000 jobs in the UK.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron said: “It is another important milestone in strengthening our economy. I am delighted that Bentley will be building their new vehicle here, not only creating a thousand jobs, but safeguarding many more, as well as increasing training opportunities for highly skilled apprentices.”
Dr. Winterkorn, Chairman of The Volkswagen Group, said: “The Volkswagen Group believes in the UK as a competitive location for industrial production. Bentley fans all around the world are looking forward to the brand’s first SUV. Together we will make this new Bentley another true Bentley – powerful, exclusive and successful.”
Bentley’s Chairman and Chief Executive, Dr Wolfgang Schreiber, added: “This is excellent news for Bentley and this new fourth model line will leverage the success of the global SUV market.”
The SUV will be a Bentley through and through with luxury, performance, quality and craftsmanship that are all done in-house. It will be the most luxurious and most powerful SUV in the market. The response from customers to a Bentley SUV has been extremely positive in the last 16 months.
The styling will set it apart from any other SUV on the road and will be true to the Bentley design DNA. That has been an area of contention among enthusiasts, but surely it will be distinct and exude panache. When it comes to SUV’s that we will see more of at the golf course than the off-road course, this will be the granddaddy of them all. All we have to do now is sit back and wait for the sneak peeks, blurbs and leaks that are bound to hit the viral highway between now and 2016.
