Audi Goes Hardcore with the Limited-Edition R8 Competition

2015 Audi R8 Competition

Motorsport-inspired.

For almost a decade, Audi has been pumping out their two-seat, mid-engined Audi R8 supercar that paid homage to the R8 LMP racer’s success at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Its ability to be a superb daily driver and serve up some incredible performance with modern styling has made it a favorite among enthusiasts across the globe. At the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show, Audi is showing their fastest, most powerful, and most hardcore, motorsports-inspired R8 yet – the Audi R8 Competition.

The new Audi R8 Competition will be limited to just 60 units in the United States and draws inspiration from the R8 LMS racecar that has achieved victories at the 24-hour-long Daytona and Nürburgring races as well as major GT-series races around the globe.

“The limited-edition Audi R8 competition is the closest road car to our R8 LMS ultra race car that has won virtually every race around the world,” said Scott Keogh, President, Audi of America. “It is designed for the driving enthusiast and we’re excited to bring 60 units as a limited-edition to the U.S.”

The same naturally-aspirated 5.2-liter FSI V-10 engine used in the R8 LMS racers powers the road-going Audi R8 Competition. The highly-awarded motor has been engineered to the highest standards and requires its first major service after about 13,000 racing miles or a full season as opposed to competitors that require a major service after every race.

The durable 5.2-liter V-10 engine makes a whopping 570 horsepower in the Audi R8 Competition and is mated to a seven-speed S tronic gearbox. Two black high-gloss tailpipes protrude from the rear bumper and spit out an intoxicating V-10 note. The most powerful Audi R8 ever produced is capable of accelerating to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds and reaching a top speed of 199 mph, which also makes it the fastest R8 ever produced by the German automaker.

But the new 2015 Audi R8 Competition is more than just a powerful engine; there’s a whole assortment of carbon fiber going on that cuts weight. Matte carbon fiber makes up the large fixed rear spoiler, side flics, front spoiler, rear diffuser, side mirrors, and engine bay to optimize aerodynamics and set itself apart from the rest of the pack. New, specially-designed five-spoke gloss black wheels with 305-sized tires hide the fade-free ceramic brakes with anodized red brake calipers that provide ultimate stopping power.

Inside, owners of the 60 Audi R8 Competition models will be greeted with special carbon fiber appointments and be able to custom-tailor their interior as well. Matte carbon fiber adorns much of the cabin including the center console and illuminated door entry sills bearing the “R8 Competition” nameplate. Being that the limited-edition supercar is an Audi exclusive line vehicle, owners can select from a virtually limitless palette of colors inside and out as well as wheel finishes and more to create a truly custom-tailored vehicle.

Only 60 examples of the 2015 Audi R8 Competition will be produced in Neckarsulm, Germany for the United States. Ordering will commence in early November with deliveries beginning at the start of 2015.
