New Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Exposed

More power, a wider body, and more standard equipment. Still want that Turbo or GT3?

At the upcoming Paris Motor Show Porsche will be unveiling the ultimate Carrera in the 911 model line, the Carrera GTS. The newest 911 variant will feature the wider body of the Carrera 4 models, a 3.8-liter packing a more powerful punch, and new interior and exterior features. The new GTS will bridge the gap between the Carrera line and the Turbo and GT3 models, giving customers added power and standard features at a lower price point.

The new 997.2 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS will be available as either a Coupé or Cabriolet and wear new exterior features to differentiate itself from the rest of the Porsche lineup. For starters the GTS will sit on the 44-mm wider track and body used by the all-wheel drive Carrera 4 models, and feature rear-wheel drive. To further enhance the athletic look the GTS possesses over the Carrera model line, Porsche has fitted the SportDesign front apron and black lower spoiler lip, while new black side skirts provide improved aerodynamics. The Porsche 911 Carrera GTS will also sit on contrasting black 19-inch RS Spyder wheels with a high gloss rim flanges and high-performance 305/30 ZR 19 tires at the rear for added grip. As Porsche does best, the GTS comes with the little details that make it stand out. The “Carrera GTS” badge on the engine cover and lower doors appears in either black or silver depending on body color, while the bodywork between the two dual tailpipes is painted black.

Inside, the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS comes with additional standard equipment and trim that provides both comfort and an athletic feel. For the standard color, “black Alcantara”, both the driver and passenger sport seats wear the soft black Alcantara, while the same material covers the three-spoke SportDesign steering wheel as well as the door armrests, and gear and handbrake levers. As always, Porsche also offers a host of interior options for a custom-tailored driving environment.

One of the highlights of the 997.2 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS besides its wider track and additional bodywork is the smooth flat-six that sits behind the driver. The new 3.8-liter direct-injection engine boasts 408 horsepower thanks to the use of a special resonance intake manifold and six vacuum-controlled tuning flaps for optimized geometry instead of the Carrera and Carrera S’s one tuning flap. This contributes to a peak torque of 310 lb-ft. being reached 200 RPM earlier than the Carrera S, at 4,200 RPM. Porsche has also added a sports exhaust system with quad tailpipes with inner shells painted in black, while the inner tubes are nano –coated and polished. The GTS will come standard with a six-speed manual transmission, while the PDK seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is also available. Performance improves with a top speed of 190 mph with the manual transmission, and the 0-62 mph sprint taking only 4.2 seconds with PDK and the Sport Chrono Package Plus.

The top-model Porsche 911 Carrera GTS will be available in either Coupé or Cabriolet form, further adding to the long list of 911 variants. Porsche plans to showcase the Carrera GTS at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, with sales beginning in December. The Coupé is set to start at € 104,935 (+/- 136,000 USD), while the Cabriolet will start at € 115,050 (+/- 150,000 USD).
