Mercedes-Benz GP by Graham London – Wednesday Watch

The car and watch relationship has been discussed in detail, and while some of them did not surprise us at all (AMG and IWC, Spyker and Chronoswiss), others did (Breitling for Bentley and Bentley).

Here at MotoringExposure, we did not see the joint venture between Graham London and Mercedes Benz GP coming. However, if we zoom in on both brands, there are a number of similarities between them. Both Mercedes and Graham London have a rich history of innovation and are now  – in 2010 – focusing on modern design, high-tech ideas and detailed craftsmanship.

The Graham London Mercedes GP Silverstone is a sports watch pure blooded and can (and should be) used on and near the racing track with its chronograph functionality. The chronograph has a 12-hour, 30-minute and seconds totalizer that are operated by “Clous de Paris” (or hobnail) pushers. The tachymeter enables you to calculate an average speed measured over 1000 meters.  Push the start button and push the same button again once the car has traveled exactly 1000 meters – the average speed is now displayed on the tachymeter ring by the large chronograph second hand.

A whopping 48mm timepiece on your wrist might seem big, but it is very useful when wearing it over your racing suit or when you need to operate it with your racing gloves slipped on. The stainless steel case and steel bezel have sapphire crystals on both sides, so you are able to glance at the caliber G173 automatic mechanical movement between races.

Available in black and white, both dials have a green rim around the hour-totalizer in deference to the PETRONAS green. The Graham logo is placed just below 12 o’clock and the Mercedes GP logo is located at 3 o’clock. Something we have not seen before is the date window located at 9 o’clock. Although the dial is kind of crowded, the face of the watch is in balance.

Another cool detail of this watch is the rubber strap that resembles the black rubber tires of racing cars. A rubber strap makes it also very suitable for water activities, given the fact that the watch itself is water resistant up to 100 meters.

This Graham-London Silverstone Mercedes GP retails for 6.300,-CHF, which is approximately 6,485.- in US dollars.
