Shattering lap times.
The term ‘muscle car’ doesn’t automatically mean that the car it is describing cannot handle in today’s world. Gone are the days where straight-line drag races were the hallmark of an American muscle car. Now, these V-8 powered, rear-wheel drive machines can carve up corners with the best European sports cars out there.
In fact, they can weave through corners even better.
Chevrolet proved just that at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife with their Camaro ZL1. The 650-horsepower, supercharged muscle car comes packed with all the latest suspension tech and goodies along with honed aerodynamics that gave it the ability to throw down a blistering 7:29.60 lap time. That’s faster than a Porsche 911 GT2, Koenigsegg CCX, and McLaren 650S Spider among a load of other exotics.
“To be almost 12 seconds quicker than the 5th-Generation ZL1 is a testament to the advanced design and technology of the new ZL1,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “From the improved aerodynamics, mass reduction and 650-horsepower LT4 to the Magnetic Ride Control, electronic limited-slip differential and Custom Launch Control, the ZL1 was designed to take on the world’s most challenging track, making it right at home on any track, road or drag strip anywhere.”
So, next time you hear the term ‘muscle car’ don’t be so quick to write it off as a straight-line showcase of American power.
