High-tech and Hardcore.

There’s a lot to get excited about with the new Mercedes-AMG E63 and E63 S sedans. Not only is the 603-horsepower 4.0-liter V-8 the most powerful ever to be installed in the E-Class, but it comes packed with a drift mode for some tire-shredding fun. It’s the best of both worlds with high-tech luxury flying towards the apex with a track-tuned chassis and V-8.

Both the Mercedes-AMG E63 and E63 S have a more aggressive presence compared to their standard counterparts. For the first time ever, a coupe-like hood sits up front with a sculpted shape. A twin-louvre radiator grille in silver chrome with black struts and “AMG” lettering instantly sets it apart and sits between the 0.67-inches wider fenders. A wider front bumper with black flics and a splitter seamlessly meshes into the extended fenders.

The distinct “V8 BITURBO 4MATIC” badges on each of the front fenders in case observers didn’t recognize the brutal powertrain beneath the hood of the super sedan. The Mercedes-AMG E63 and E63 S both wear a spoiler lip, wider rear bumper, diffuser-look insert, and chrome twin tailpipes. The E63 S however, has a silver chrome trim strip adorning its rear end.

Sitting beneath the sculpted coupe-like hood of the Mercedes-AMG E63 and E63 S is the hand-built, twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine. In the E63, this force-fed V-8 spits out 563 horsepower from 5,750 to 6,500 RPM and 553 lb-ft. of torque from 2,250 to 5,000 RPM. In the Mercedes-AMG E63 S, a hotter version of the V-8 makes it the most powerful E-Class ever. Here, a total of 603 horsepower is on tap from 5,750 to 6,500 RPM. Torque is rated at 627 lb-ft. from 2,500 to 4,500 RPM. Both models also transfer that power with a cylinder management and deactivation system to save fuel.

Transferring that power on both the Mercedes-AMG E63 and E63 S is an AMG Speedshift MCT nine-speed gearbox with specially-tuned hardware and software for performance. The dual-clutch transmission features shorter shift times and a wet start-off clutch for insane acceleration from a stop. In the E63, the 0-60 mph sprint takes 3.4 seconds while the E63 S takes a mere 3.3 seconds. Top speed is 155 mph and 186 mph, respectively.

Also coming standard on both the Mercedes-AMG E63 and E63 S is the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system. Torque is variably distributed between the front and rear axles with the best possible distribution continuously being calculated. In times where it’s applicable, the system transforms the super sedan into a rear-wheel drive vehicle until torque is needed at the front axles. A mechanical rear differential generates traction in the E63 while the E63 S comes packed with an electronic rear differential for maximum grip.

Drift Mode also comes standard, which switches the all-wheel drive system into a purely rear-wheel dive setup, allowing drivers to break traction for some white-knuckled fun.

While traction and brutal power are hallmarks of the new Mercedes-AMG E63 and E63 S models, the suspension will provide drivers with quite a bit of enjoyment. The entire front and rear axle suspension was redesigned with the multi-chamber AIR BODY CONTROL air suspension as the basis. New lightweight materials, elastokinematics, and components were added to make the German sedan more athletic. Engineers even went to the AMG GT R to install a similar tubular anti-roll bar to cut weight and optimize handling. With the changes the camber stability can be improved by 30 percent compared to the previous-generation model.

Hitting the pavement are new lightweight alloy wheels on the E63 and E63 S models. The former comes standard with 9.5J x 19 front and 10.0J x 19 rear ten-spoke, titanium grey wheels while the E63 S features 9.5J x 20 and 10.0J x 20 rear five-spoke matte titanium grey alloy wheels. Larger 20-inch cross-spoke forged wheels are also available.

Behind those wheels sit beefier brakes boasting a radical connection derived from motorsports. The E63 has 14.2 x 1.4-inch vented and perforated discs with six-piston calipers up front and 14.2 x 0.9-inch discs and single-piston rotors at the rear. The E63 S sibling has larger 15.4 x 1.4-inch brake discs up front as standard. As an option, 15.8 x 1.5-inch front and 14.2 x 1.3-inch rear Carbon Ceramic brakes are available for those track nuts.

Inside, things are a blend of luxury, tech, and performance. In the E63, nappa leather and DINAMICA microfiber in black, nut brown nappa, or macchiato is available with matching door panels. Aluminum trim elements with a unique pattern create a sporty, teutonic atmosphere. The E63 S boasts an additional nappa leather instrument binnacle and beltline, a sports steering wheel with crystal grey 12 o’clock marking, and IWC-analog clock. Crystal grey seat belts and seat piping along with AMG crests in the headrest set it apart as a special super sedan. Both models feature an AMG-specific instrument cluster with RACETIMER system for recording lap times. As an option, the Mercedes-AMG Track Pace app lets drivers share their lap times and video on social media.
