<p>Motorsports have always played an important role at <strong>BMW Alpina</strong>. Much of the technology and experience gained in racing has translated over to many of the company’s products and automobiles. In 1988, BMW Alpina pulled out of racing for a period of over 20 years and finally made their return to the track in 2009 with the Alpina B6 GT3. After achieving much success with the D6 GT3 and drivers Alexandros Margaritis and Dino Lunardi, BMW Alpina decided to make a limited edition street-legal racecar.</p>
<p>Shown for the first time at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, the <strong>Alpina B3 GT3</strong> is a track-ready D3 modeled heavily after the successful D6 GT3. The Alpina B3 GT3 will be powered by the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder engine of the <a title="BMW Alpina B3 S Bi-Turbo Exposed" href="http://www.motoringexposure.com/1501/bmw-alpina-b3-biturbo-exposed" target="_blank">B3 BiTurbo</a>, mated to a ZF six-speed sport automatic transmission. Alpina has installed a new Akrapovic exhaust system on the B3 GT3 to reduce backpressure and shed weight. The titanium construction of the exhaust, removal of the middle muffler, and use of a cross-pipe saved 22.4 lbs. and increased power by approximately eight horses. After the upgrades, the 3.0-liter produces 408 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 398 lb-ft. of torque at 4,500 RPM. The added power helps the Alpina B3 GT3 accelerate to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 186 mph (300 km/h).</p>
<p>As with all racecars, the Alpina <strong>B3 GT3</strong> features a host of performance-oriented chassis goodies. The suspension was replaced with a new coilover system that has 18-way compression and 12-way rebound adjustability along with a full range of ride height options. New front top mounts with adjustable plates help improve chassis rigidity and provide dynamic handling characteristics. The camber at the front axle can also be adjusted for specific tracks.</p>
<p>In addition to the race-bred suspension, the wheels and tires of the D3 GT3 are designed specifically for performance. The classic 20-spoke Alpina wheels were manufactured using a forging process to reduce weight and increase strength. The 19-inch Himalaya grey wheels are 25 percent lighter and measure 8.5 x19 up front and 9.5 x 18 rear with Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires standard. As an option, customers can order a GT3 Cup kit that is compromised of Alpina GT3 Classic lightweight alloy forged wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup+ tires. Behind the wheels is a powerful braking system that is designed to prevent fade. The high-performance setup features six-piston front calipers with 380 x 35 mm discs and four-piston calipers with 355 x 32 mm at the rear. Each caliper is painted blue and wears silver “ALPINA” logos.</p>
<p>The entire exterior was optimized with racing accessories and bodywork in order to provide maximum aerodynamic performance.  The front spoiler was fitted with a new splitter, and the front fascia was given dive plates to improve downforce. The rear of the Alpina D3 GT3 features a large carbon fiber spoiler and a matte black diffuser. Each component helps to reduce lift without affecting the D3 GT3’s drag coefficient.</p>
<p>Inside of the BMW Alpina D3 GT3 is a black interior with soft leather and grippy alcantara. Lightweight Recaro sports with heating and adjustability provide front passengers with superb lateral support and comfort. All of the seats feature special Alpina vertical racing-colored stripes, while the alcantara sports steering wheel with paddle shifters is given racing-colored stitching.</p>
<p>The BMW Alpina D3 GT3 will be available starting at € 90,000 and be limited to a production of just 99 units. Customers can order the D3 GT3 in three standard colors or the featured B6 GT3 designed full body vinyl wrapping. Each D3 GT3 will come standard with a Drexler limited-slip differential.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For those that just can’t wait for the new <a title="2012 BMW F10 M5 Exposed" href="http://www.motoringexposure.com/6592/2012-bmw-f10-m5-exposed" target="_blank">F10 M5</a>.</p>
<p>Based on the new sixth-generation BMW 5-Series, the new Alpina B5 Bi-Turbo embodies the classic blend of sport and refinement unique to <strong>Alpina</strong> models. Featuring the same Bi-Turbo V-8 found in the B7 Bi-Turbo, a first-class interior, and revised suspension and bodywork, the latest B5 Bi-Turbo adds more excitement and luxury to the latest 5-Series sedan.</p>
<p>Under the hood of the new B5 Bi-Turbo is the same 4.4-liter V-8 that made its debut in the <a title="2011 BMW Alpina B7 Exposed" href="http://www.motoringexposure.com/932/2011-bmw-alpina-b7-exposed" target="_blank">BMW Alpina B7</a> Bi-Turbo. The twin-turbocharged V-8 is fitted with new, larger turbochargers from Honeywell-Garrett with a more efficient inter-cooling system help to achieve improved throttle response and a broader torque curve. Additionally, new pistons developed in conjunction with Mahle have been installed in order to withstand the increased boost pressure and 9.2:1 compression ratio. Although the V-8 packs 507 hp and 517 lb-ft. of torque, it still retains a class-leading 26.2 imp. mpg and 252 g/km CO2.</p>
<p>To handle the increased power and provide enhanced performance and refinement, engineers at Alpina have subjected the ZF eight-speed automatic to extensive testing. Coupled with the V-8, the transmission allows for effortless and uninterrupted gear changes. Switching to Sport Mode results in quicker up-shifts and employs Alpina’s single-cylinder step-down (EZA), which interrupts the fuel supply to a given cylinder to attain the reduction in torque required for quick shifts. In Manual Mode, the driver can change gears using the Switch-Tronic buttons behind the steering wheel without having to worry about mandatory up-shifts. With the updated transmission, the <strong>B5 Bi-Turbo</strong> can sprint to 62 mph in just 4.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 191 mph.</p>
<p>In the new <strong>Alpina B5 Bi-Turbo</strong>, Alpina’s goal was to create a neutral and balanced handling setup by modifying the suspension and adding new wheels. Special suspension arms and shorter, but progressive springs create more front camber, while an electronically adjustable suspension system (Variable Damper Control) alloys for adaptable handling characteristics. Newly developed Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires provide superb high-speed stability and are fitted to 20-inch Alpina Classic wheels measuring 8.5 x 20 at the front axle and 9.5 x 20 at the rear.</p>
<p>The exterior of the newest Alpina exudes confidence and class with functional bodywork. The front features a new bumper with a large air intake and splitter, while the rear sports a new trunk spoiler and wears a new valance with an integrated diffuser. The new aerodynamic bodywork results in a 30 percent front and 60 percent rear reduction in lift for high-speed stability.</p>
<p>Inside, the <strong>Alpina BMW</strong> B5 Bi-Turbo is features an elegant and satisfying cabin. New adjustable comfort seats are dressed in a rich leather, while Alpina burled Myrtle wood graces the dashboard and trim. Precise driving is guaranteed with the hand-stitched Lavalina leather Switch-Tronic steering wheel and blue Alpina gauges with black-panel LCD technology.</p>
<p>Pricing and availability for the B5 Bi-Turbo has not been released, but expect a near-$100k price tag.</p>

<p>Since the 1989 B10 Bi-Turbo <strong>Alpina </strong>has been improving performance and efficiency through the use of turbochargers in many of their models. The 2010 B3 S Bi-Turbo is no exception, using the twin-turbocharged BMW 3.0-liter inline six to create an efficient and powerful car.</p>
<p>The powerful turbocharged inline six engine used in the <strong>B3 S</strong> benefits from years of testing and development at the hands of Alpina. For increased power and throttle response, engineers have modified the intake and exhaust systems for optimal efficiency. To handle the 1.2 BAR (17.4 PSI) of boost pressure created by both turbochargers and a compression ratio of 9.4:1 Alpina uses high-strength MAHLE pistons and an enhanced cooling system with additional radiator. This results in a power output of 400 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 397 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 RPM – over 130 hp per liter! The 3.0-liter inline six provides a meaty powerband, as 294 lb-ft of torque is available from just 1,300 RPM all the way to 6,000 RPM. This allows the B3 S to effortlessly accelerate, sprinting to 62 mph in just 4.7 seconds, while a top speed of 186 mph is achieved by the coupe and convertible variants.</p>
<p>The enhanced performance does not come with consumption penalty; in fact it offers class-leading economy figures of 29.1 mpg and 224-225 g/km CO2. This comes thanks to engine mapping optimization and direct fuel injection.</p>
<p>Depending on the variant, power is sent to either the rear or all four wheels through the Alpina Switch-Tronic six-speed automatic transmission. In automatic mode, the transmission shifts smoothly for a quiet and relaxing ride. In manual however, it’s a different story. Gear changes take just a few hundred milliseconds without an interruption in power, and are controlled by shift buttons on the back of the steering wheel. Downshifts are seamless as the throttle is automatically synchronized in manual mode for composed driving.</p>
<p>The dynamic performance of the B3 S Bi-Turbo is showcased through the optimized aerodynamic modifications. The front features a new spoiler, which reduces lift at the front axle and redirects air to the enhanced cooling system. The rear of both the coupe and convertible features a new valance with an integrated diffuser and quad tailpipes. Completing the tasteful appearance are 19-inch <strong>Alpina BMW</strong> Classic lightweight alloy wheels. The 20-spoke wheels feature a unique hidden air valve mounted in the wheel center covered by a cap for an clean finish. Both the Alpina Classic and optional Dynamic wheels are shod in 245/40 ZR18 front and 265/40 ZR18 rear Michelin Pilot Sport 2 rubber.</p>
<p>Inside the B3 S is a premium interior with classic Alpina features. Comfortable sport seats with ample side support have been fitted with the Alpina Switch-Tronic leather sports steering wheel. Clean Alpina blue gauges feature a digital speed indicator and engine oil temperature.</p>
<p>The <strong>B3 S Bi-Turbo</strong> will be available in Saloon, Touring, Coupe, and Convertible trims. Expect pricing to start upwards of £50,000 (+/- 75,000 USD).</p>

<p><strong>Alpina </strong>has shared a long history with BMW, beginning in 1961 when the son of the founder of Alpina Business Machines, Burkard Bovensiepen, developed a dual-carberateur setup for the BMW 1500 sedan. Alpina has since worked with BMW to create special versions known for their unmatched performance, luxury, and quality. So when BMW decided to develop the ultimate 7 Series, they turned to Alpina.</p>
<p>Renown for their performance tuning, <strong>Alpina BMW</strong> has once again achieved impressive figures with the B7. Using BMW’s twin turbocharged, 4.4-liter, aluminum V-8, Alpina was able to achieve an output of 500 horsepower and 516 lb-ft. of torque using high performance pistons, optimizing intercooler efficiency, enlarging two intercoolers by 35%, and installing an Alpina exhaust system. With a maximum boost pressure of 1.0 BAR and peak torque available from 3,000 to 4,750 RPM, the rear-wheel-drive sedan rockets to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. A six-speed sport transmission with Alpina Swtich-Tronic control changes gears in just a few hundred milliseconds, and features two modes: Sport and Manual. Gear changes can be manually operated by two buttons behind the Alpina steering wheel, allowing for complete driver control.</p>
<p>Based on the advanced suspension of the BMW 7 Series, the <strong>Alpina B7</strong> utilizes calibrated springs to lower the car by 15m at the front and 10mm at the rear. Retuned Dynamic Damping Control and Active Roll Stabilization systems work to make the B7 a neutral-handling automobile. Three suspension set-ups are available: Comfort, Normal, and Sport to provide an optimum ride.</p>
<p>The design of the B7 closely follows the principal “form follows function.” Alpina has designed front and rear spoilers to increase stability at high speeds, reducing lift by 30% at the front and 15% at the rear, while still retaining a muscular appearance. The front fascia also optimizes airflow to the engine and transmission oil coolers. The B7 receives the traditional 20-spoke Alpina Classic 21-inch wheels which measure 8.5 x 21 inches at the front and 10 x 21 inches at the rear, and feature Alpina centercaps. The classic wheels wear specially-selected staggered 245/35 R21 front and 285/30 R21 rear Michelin PS2 tires. The signature Alpina Blue metallic paint will be available to create a truly unique 7 Series, while factory colors will also be available.</p>
<p>A rich and luxurious cabin transforms the B7 into the ultimate 7 Series. Hand stitched in Lavalina leather, the Switch-Tronic steering wheel emphasizes the synthesis of performance and luxury. The black-panel LCD instrument cluster, steering wheel, and seatbacks of the Comfort leather seats are branded with the Alpina logo, while illuminated door sill trims glow with the legendary Alpina name. A precious wood trim made of Myrtle Burl, found only in the Pacific Coast of the United States dresses the cabin, while an optional Alpina Piano Lacquer trim featuring silver diagonal rhombs is also available.</p>
<p>The <strong>BMW Alpina B7</strong> will go on sale in the North American market in the spring of 2010 at authorized BMW dealerships. Both long and short wheelbase versions will be available with pricing set to be announced closer to the on-sale-date.</p>
