The legend returns.

The legend returns.

October 11th, 1992, Roberto Ravaglia drives his BMW M3 Sport Evolution to an overall win at Hockenheim in DTM. It would be the last DTM victory that BMW celebrated as they later withdrew from the racing series. Now, almost 20 years later, the brand has announced they will return to the racing series with their M3 DTM racecar.

At the Double Cone building at Munich’s BMW Welt, BMW unveiled their new M3 DTM Concept car for the 2012 racing season, and announced their first two confirmed drivers along with a list of their newest partners. The BMW M3 DTM was introduced wearing a coat of matte black paint and new partner livery. The M3 DTM had been in development since the fall of 2010 with engineers working to create aerodynamic and mechanical advantages for the racecar. The 4.0-liter V-8 engine is fitted with air restrictors that limit the output to 480 bhp to meet regulations. All 480 bhp is sent through a six-speed sequential transmission and can propel the M3 DTM Concept to 62 mph in approximately three seconds and to a top speed of about 186 mph depending on the aerodynamic setup and gear ratios. Based on the fourth-generation M3, the DTM Concept features a CFRP monocoque with steel roll cage structure and numerous aerodynamic spoilers, side flics, and vents for increased downforce and cooling.

The first two drivers that were introduced as part of the new BMW teams have both achieved a great deal of racing success throughout their careers. Andy Priaulx (GB) and Augusto Farfus (BR) will be behind the M3 DTM racecars for the start of the 2012 season. Priaulx (GB) has won three World Championship titles, a European Touring Car Championship with BMW, and victories at the 2005 Nürburgring 24 Hours and 12 Hours of Sebring. Farfus (BR) has also achieved racing success with 15 World Touring Car Championship wins, a victory at the 2010 Nürburgring 24 Hours, and a number of other BMW racing successes.

“The DTM will be a big challenge for us all,” said Priaulx. ”Together with BMW, I have celebrated success in many different disciplines and behind the wheel of some fantastic racing cars in recent years. I am more than confident that this will also be the case in the DTM. The BMW M3 DTM looks fantastic. I can hardly wait to get to know the car better in the coming tests, to contribute to its development, and ultimately to sit in the cockpit for the first DTM race in 2012.”

Three different BMW teams will participate in the 2012 DTM season: BMW Team Schnitzer, BMW Team RBM, and BMW Team RMG; all with a host of new partners. Premium Partners include Crowne Plaza Hotels & Rezorts and Deutsche Post AG, while Castrol Edge will continue as the Premium Technical Partner for the BMW teams. H&R, SONAX, and ZF Sachs have also joined as Official Partners, and Sympatex will be the Official Supplier.

“It is good to see how our DTM project is picking up speed,” said Dr. Draeger, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for development. ”Next year, BMW returns to the DTM after two decades. We will be facing our main competitors in the premium sector – and are already looking forward to this challenge. The DTM comeback sees BMW return to its roots. We have enjoyed great success in production car racing in the past, and I am convinced we will follow on in 2012 where we left off. Everyone at BMW Motorsport is working hard to ensure we get off to a successful start next season.”

Between 1984 and 1992 BMW achieved 49 wins DTM racing series. With the introduction of the E30 M3, BMW teams were able to race to 40 victories and 151 podium finishes. The new BMW DTM M3 will look to build upon their historic success in the 2012 season and help develop new technology for use in the brand’s production cars.

Carbon Racing Technology.

Carbon Racing Technology.

The newest M3 to bear the “limited-edition” status can be looked at as a production concept car. While only 67 examples will be made, the BMW M3 CRT is a showcase of new carbon fiber production methods and technology. BMW has used carbon fiber extensively in the limited-production E90 M3, thus resulting in a lower power-to-weight ratio than previous M3 models. The new BMW M3 CRT also features a number of motorsport-inspired chassis, engine, and aerodynamic enhancements that almost rival its GTS sibling.

The most important innovation featured on the new BMW M3 CRT (Carbon Racing Technology) is the usage of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) components throughout the sedan. The new CFRP is produced using a new, innovative manufacturing process that allows for the widespread use of the lightweight material. With this new process, excess cuttings can also be reprocessed. Basic carbon fiber thread is woven into CFRP mats and then impregnated with synthetic resin then left to harden. With many of the new components the CFRP is then wrapped in either an aramid or recycled paper honeycomb structure that gives the component ever greater strength and durability.

There are numerous exterior enhancements to the new carbon fiber M3. At the front, the bumper wears a new CFRP air channeling elements with a Melbourne Red metallic accent. The entire hood was made from two CFRP layers wrapped around a honeycomb structure, giving the hood the same strength as a steel component at a quarter of the weight, and is 50 percent lighter than the production hood. The hood also uses two air outlets with Melbourne Red highlights to help dissipate heat. At the rear sits a new CFRP trunk-mounted spoiler for additional downforce. After all of the new carbon fiber goodies, the new BMW M3 CTR weighs in at 3,483lbs.; a 100 lb. (or 154 lb. if you consider equipment) reduction in weight over the production M3. The entire M3 CRT is dressed in an exclusive Frozen Polar Silver metallic paint and is highlighted by new Melbourne Red metallic accents and a special kidney bean grille treatment.

The M3 CRT isn’t limited to just exterior upgrades. The chassis, brakes, and wheels have been improved as well. A new rigid rear axle subframe and adjustable coilover suspension has been added. Upgraded six-piston fixed-caliper lightweight brakes have been installed and clamp down on 378 x 32 mm front and 380 x 28 mm rear ventilated brake discs with Stahlflex lines and model specific comfort pads. Hiding the upgraded brakes are 19J x 19 front and 10J x 19 rear M-Sport wheels with a Y-spoke design with 245/35 R19 front and 265/35 R19 rear tires.

Under the CFRP hood is the GTS-version of the M3’s V8. The 4.4 liter features an aluminum-silicon alloy bedplate, individual throttle butterflies, a knock control system with ion current technology, and a dynamically-optimized wet-sump oil supply. The total output for the V-8 is set at 450 horsepower at 8,300 RPM, and 325 lb-ft. of torque at 3,750 RPM. Power is sent to the rear wheels though a lightning-fast seven-speed dual-clutch M DCT Drivelogic gearbox with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. With a power-to-weight ratio of 3.5 kg (7.7 lbs) per horsepower and a 450 horsepower V-8, the M3 CRT can accelerate to 62 mph in just 4.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 180 mph (290 km/h).

Inside, the BMW M3 CRT features a number of exclusive upgrades and lightweight features. The bucket seats are made by wrapping CFRP around a recycled-paper honeycomb with traditional carbon fiber. Instead of the bench seating in the rear, the CRT is equipped with two individual bucket seats in Sakhir Orange and Black bi-color leather. New door sills, door panels, and trim pieces come in exclusive aluminum grain and Sakhir Orange coloring.

The new BMW E90 M3 CRT will be limited to just 67 examples. Pricing has not been released.

Back with a vengeance.

Back with a vengeance.

It’s been just over a year since BMW introduced the sixth-generation of 5-Series, which means automotive enthusiasts all over the world have been eagerly waiting for that distinguished “M” badge to adorn the rear trunklid of the executive sedan. After many months of speculation, spy shots, rumors, and that 2012 M5 Concept teaser, BMW has finally unveiled the fifth generation of the M5 family tree.

The new BMW M5 is all about efficient power. The award-winning S85B50 5.0-liter V-10 used in the M5 and M6 is now gone, replaced with a twin-turbo V-8 with better emissions and fuel economy. And here’s one that will really get enthusiasts riled up – the new M5 will come standard with a double-clutch transmission! But, much of the M’s character still remains. Power is still sent to the rear wheels, handling is precise, those exclusive M aesthetics and trim are present, and it is still a track star with an executive appeal.

Efficient Dynamics is the name of the game at BMW today, and the new twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 is a shining example of the new mindset. Through the use of turbocharging, direct injection, and Valvetronic valve control, the new engine decreases fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by over 30 percent while upping horsepower output by 10 percent and torque by 30 percent over the previous V-10 powerplant. Two twin-scroll turbochargers are positioned between the “V” of the cylinder banks to provide immediate power without lag, and force-feed the eight-cylinder with up to 1.5 BAR (21.76 PSI) of boost. This also helps the engine achieve its maximum torque output of 502 lb-ft. (680 Nm) from just 1,500 RPM all the way to 5,750 RPM. The 4.4-liter is the most powerful engine fitted into a production BMW by the M-Division to date. A total of 560 (412 kW) horses are on tap from 6,000 to 7,000 RPM.

This immense power is sent through a standard seven-speed M double-clutch transmission to the rear wheels. The DCT can be switched between automatic (D) and manual (S) mode, with the latter allowing the driver to switch gears by using the steering wheel mounted shift paddles or the M gear selector. Each mode can be custom-tailored by the driver to shift differently depending on the driving style, whether it is efficient or dynamic. An active M-differential with electronically controlled multi-plate helps to achieve optimal traction. Along with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) the system can work to adjust the degree of lock between 0 and 100 percent within a fraction of a second.

The new BMW F10 M5 offers stunning performance even though it is more efficient than the previous model. Acceleration to 62 mph takes just 4.4 seconds, 124 mph is shattered in 13 flat, and top speed is an electronically limited 155 mph (250 km/h); or 190 mph (305 km/h) if equipped with the M Driver’s Package.

The chassis is also exclusive to the M5. New adjustments and upgrades have been made to produce a more driver-oriented and dynamic experience. Both the front and rear suspension feature new lightweight M-specific axle kinematics for better handling along with electronically controlled Dynamic Damper Control that can automatically adjust in any driving condition. New high-performance compound brakes with six-piston calipers reduce fade under track conditions. Standard on the 2012 BMW M5 are new M-specific light alloy 19-inch wheels fitted with 265/40 R19 tires at the front and 295/40 R19 at the rear. Customers can also upgrade to lightweight 20-inch forged alloys as an option.

Just like the previous four models that came before, the new M5 features a number of distinct exterior upgrades. The front bumper is all new and now features large air intakes to feed the engine and brakes with cool air. All four fenders have been extended to accommodate the wider track, and create an athletic stance. The widened front fenders also feature new M “gills” with integrated indicator bars. The rear has been aerodynamically optimized with an integrated diffuser between the quad tailpipes and a subtle rear spoiler on the trunklid.

Inside the M5 is that same mix of sport and luxury that makes the sedan so special. A number of exclusive M-sport features and trim pieces are featured such as the instrument cluster with black-panel technology, M Sport seats, leather covered center console, Aluminum trace trim strips Anthracite headliner, and ambient lighting. Rich Merino leather comes standard and covers the entire seating and center console. Other standard features include BMW ConnectedDrive and an M-specific heads up display.

The new 2012 BMW F10 M5 is the fifth installment in the M5 model history. BMW has not released pricing and availability for the performance sedan, so stay tuned!

The fifth generation of the “wolf in a business suit.”

The fifth generation of the “wolf in a business suit.”

It all started in 1985, when BMW introduced the first M5 – a premium sedan with the heart of a sportscar. For 26 years, the M5 has been the archetypical sports sedan, offering everyday drivability and exciting performance at the push of a pedal. At the 2011 Shanghai Auto show, BMW will introduce the latest thoroughbred to the legendary family of sport sedans with the BMW Concept M5.

When BMW introduced the latest 5 Series (F10) to the market, it received some criticism for being too conservative. The new M5 however, measures up to the past generations and has a sporty character that it flaunts with its muscular exterior design.

The M5 Concept can be immediately identified by car enthusiasts as a 5 Series with “a little something extra” by the front fascia. The hood’s sculpted contour lines are directed towards the characteristic BMW kidney bean grille, creating the impression of movement. The grille is flanked by dual xenon headlights with piercing blue surrounds. The new bumper features three large air intakes to optimize engine cooling. The middle intake is a mirror image of the kidney bean grille, while both side intakes are curved and feature flaps along the outside to redirect cool air to what’s hiding under the hood.

But the M5 is more than about a more aggressive face, it has bigger muscles too. All four wheel arches are extended, lending to a more powerful appearance and wider track. Both front fenders wear a new M-badge of honor, with gill elements featuring chrome surround and “M” logo. These gills also serve as the start of a sculpted “swage” line that runs along the side of the M5 and ends at the rear, contributing to the dynamic stance.

The rear is where all the magic happens. The athletic character is more apparent here than anywhere else on the M5. The rear wheel arches protrude and create a dynamic stance. Sitting atop the rear trunklid is a subtle rear spoiler that, in conjunction with the diffuser, helps optimize downforce for high speed stability. If that doesn’t catch your eye, the dual exhaust with quad tips will grab your attention with a press of the throttle.

One of the goals for the exterior was to emphasize the power that lies underneath the hood. While some may be saddened at the death of the 5.0-liter V-10 that made the previous generation unique, the new twin-turbocharged V-8 promises to be more responsive and efficient than before. While specifications of the new V-8 haven’t been released (come on BMW!!!) it promises to be 25 percent more fuel efficient and emissions friendly. Part of the improvement in efficiency can be attributed to the seven-speed M dual-clutch transmission with Drivelogic designed specifically for the M5’s V-8 engine. The new dual-clutch gearbox sends power to the rear wheels and provides lightning-fast shifts, resulting in uninterrupted power. A new feature for the M5 is BMW’s new stop-start function. The system helps to improve efficiency by shutting off the engine when the car is stopped. The engine is restarted upon releasing the brake pedal.

The M5 has never been about just having a powerful engine and muscular styling. It also has to handle like a sportscar. The M5 has been fitted with a bespoke suspension that is lower and provides more precise handling than the “base” 5 Series. Filling the wider wheel arches are new 20-inch forged wheels with 265/35 ZR20 front and 265/35 ZR20 rear performance tires. Traction and handling is further optimized with the Active M Differential that uses a multi-plate lock inside of the rear differential to prevent wheel spin.

The official unveiling of the BMW M5 will be on April 19th at the Auto Shanghai 2011. Specifications and pricing have not been released (BMW loves to tease us), but you can be sure to find them on MotoringExposure.com when they are announced!

BMW welcomes its newest member of the M family.

BMW welcomes its newest member of the M family.

In 1988 BMW debuted an M-model that would make history and establish BMW M GmbH as a distinguished name in the automotive industry – the M3. Since then several BMW models have worn the famous “M” badge from the 3 Series to the X5 SUV, each demonstrating BMW’s slogan of being the “Ultimate Driving Machine”. The latest BMW to bear the “M” badge is the 1 Series, a small two-door coupe that showcases racecar-like performance in without sacrificing everyday drivability.

The new 1 Series M Coupe features a number of upgrades that make it lighter, faster, and more nimble than rest of the 1 Series model range. Not a single aspect of the 1 Series was overlooked by M GmbH, from the redesigned bodywork to the aluminum suspension components. And, while the BMW lineup has grown over the three decades since the original M3, the 1 Series M Coupe retains strikingly similar dimensions as the first M3.

Compared to its 128i and 135i siblings, the 1 Series M is more aerodynamically efficient and wears a meaner face. The front exhibits an aggressive bumper with three large air intakes that feed cool air to the engine, oil cooler, and coolant radiator. The wheel arches have also been extended to fit a track that is 2.8 inches wider up front and 1.8 inches wider at the rear compared to the 135i. For the first time on a production BMW, air curtains are utilized. The innovative air curtains use 10 x 3 cm air ducts at either side of the front fascia to improve airflow around the wheel arches, thus reducing turbulence. Further enhancing aerodynamics are new side mirrors and a subtle rear spoiler that improves downforce. Other than the new “M-badge” on the trunk, the rear is also fitted with two sets of unique twin chrome tailpipes. The 1 Series M Coupe will also be available in three exclusive colors: Alpine White Metallic, Black Sapphire Metallic, and Valencia Orange.

One of, if not the, most exciting aspects about the BMW 1 Series M Coupe is the engine. Just like the previous generations of M-models, the new 1 Series M is powered by an inline-six. Displacing 3.0 liters and force-fed by two low-mass turbochargers, the heart of the coupe erupts with excitement at the push of the throttle. A wide powerband ensures effortless power from almost any RPM, with 332 lb-ft. of peak torque being available in a plateau from just 1,500 RPM to 4,500 RPM. An additional 39 lb-ft. is available with the overboost function, bringing maximum torque output to 369 lb-ft. under full throttle. Maximum horsepower is reached at 5,900 RPM, with 335 horsepower being sent to the rear wheels through a close ratio six-speed manual. A new M differential lock also comes standard, quickly redirecting torque to provide improved traction.

As with all M-models the 1 Series M Coupe offers thrilling performance. Acceleration to 60 mph takes only 4.7 seconds (0-62 mph in 4.9 seconds), while the quarter mile is run in just 13.2 seconds. Top speed is (unfortunately) electronically limited to 155 mph. The coupe has also unofficially lapped the Nürburgring in 8:12 – seven seconds slower than the current M3, but ten seconds faster than the E46 M3 and faster than the mighty M5.

Not only is the new 1 Series M Coupe fast, but it also features sharp, precise handling thanks to lightweight upgrades. Both the front and rear suspension now use aluminum components and use the same design as the current M3. The 1 Series M also uses exclusive hollow anti-roll bars at the front and rear to further improve balance and handling. New lightweight cross-spoke wheels from the M3 Competition package and M3 GTS are fitted and are finished in silver. The wheels measure 19 x 9 up front and 19 x 10 at the rear, and are shod in 245/35/R19 front and 265/35/R19 rear low-profile rubber. Behind the wheels are powerful new internally-vented, cross-drilled brakes that are 14.2 inches in diameter up front and 13.8 inches at the rear.

Inside, designers focused on creating a driver-oriented environment. Facing the driver is a leather M multifunction steering wheel with a special M-Button. Pressing the M-Button will activate all the fun stuff, creating a sharp throttle response and raising the threshold of electronic aids giving the driver more control. An M-specific instrument cluster comes standard, featuring grey dials, M red indicators, and white backlighting. The door panels, door pulls, instrument cluster binnacle, dashboard, gearshifter, and handbrake lever are all covered in black alcantara with contrasting orange stitching. Providing occupants with superb lateral support are black sport seats wearing Boston leather with orange stitching and M-logos in the headrests.

The new 1 Series M Coupe will make its American debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The sportscar will be available in the spring of 2011 and be restricted to a limited production run. Pricing and official production numbers will be released later by BMW.

Celebrating 25 years of a motoring legend.

Celebrating 25 years of a motoring legend.

Born out of motorsport, the BMW M3 legacy has spanned 25 years and four generations, growing from a homologation-special 3-Series competing in the German Touring Car Championship to a white-knuckle V-8 battling in the American Le Mans Series. To celebrate the rich history of the M3, BMW has announced a limited production run of thirty Frozen Gray M3 Coupes for the 2011 model year. Identically equipped, the special-edition M3 Coupes feature an exclusive exterior paint and a unique interior color combination.

The one-of-a-kind Frozen Gray Metallic paint accentuates the M3’s muscular lines with its metallic luster. In order to obtain the special finish, a base coat of Space Gray Metallic paint is applied, and then covered with a special BMW ColorSystem silk matte clear coat. The result is a superb finish that adds to the exclusivity of the Frozen Gray M3 Coupe.

All thirty of the M3 Frozen Gray Coupes will be equipped with the 414 horsepower 4.0-liter M V-8 engine mated to BMW’s M DCT (Double Clutch Transmission). With the DCT transmission, the M3 Coupe can sprint to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, compared to 4.7 seconds with the manual. Additionally, each of the Coupes will be outfitted with the M3 Competition Package. The package adds a set of 19-inch wheels with a wider offset, lowers the ride height by 10 mm (0.4 in), and reprograms the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) for a more pure driving experience.

Inside, the special-edition BMW M3 Frozen Gray Coupes will feature a unique Fox Red with Black Novillo leather interior. Adding to the sporty character of the M3 is a carbon leather trim. Both the Premium and Technology packages are included, adding features such as heated seats, navigation, enhanced premium sound system, BMW Assist with Bluetooth, and iPod and USB adapter.

Each exclusive M3 retails for $77,600 including the gas-guzzler tax, destination, and handling. Each owner will also be treated to a one-day enrollment at the BMW Performance Driving School in Spartanburg, South Carolina. For those looking to purchase one of the 2011 Frozen Gray M3 Coupes you’re out of luck. All thirty were reserved within twelve minutes.

BMW unleashes a hardcore track star.

BMW unleashes a hardcore track star.

Based on the M3 coupe, the M3 GTS is a motorsport-bred monster developed to conquer racetracks. The new GTS weighs in at just under 3,300 lbs., more than 300 lbs. lighter than the standard M3 coupe thanks to the use of titanium exhaust silencers, an extra light center console, lightweight door linings, specialized sound insulation. The GTS does away with other unnecessary features like the rear seats, air conditioning, and sound system – the V-8 provides the soundtrack. New supportive and lightweight bucket seats with six-point seat belts, along with an emergency off switch and fire extinguisher provide increased safety, while a rollcage replaces the rear seats.

Receiving a dose of motorsport engineering, the V-8 engine has been enlarged to 4.4 liters and is constructed in a bedplate design using aluminum-silicon alloy. New anti-knock sensors with ion flow technology, individual throttle butterflies, and a wet sump oil supply help provide a wide powerband and an output of 450 hp. BMW’s seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, the M DKG Drivelogic, transmits power to the rear wheels and provides uninterrupted gear changes.

A number of new aerodynamic components work to increase downforce and redirect airflow. An adjustable rear wing and front air dam based on the BMW 320si Touring Car allow for optimal downforce and stability at high speeds. The kidney grille is finished in a special dark eloxy-plated chrome providing a more sinister presence.

A revised suspension allows the BMW M3 GTS to stay planted to the racetrack, featuring adjustable dampers and a bolted rear axle subframe. Fixed six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers provide increased stopping power over the standard M3. Rounding off the confident poise of the GTS is a set of double-spoke 19-inch M light alloy Competition wheels wrapped in 255/35 ZR19 front and 285/30 ZR19 rear tires.

The interior of the 2010 BMW M3 GTS will feature door and side panels at the rear along with the M steering wheel in alcantara. Carbon will trim the cabin, completing the sporty character of the GTS. A number of additional features will be available and can be custom tailored for the driver.

Almost entirely hand-built, the M3 GTS will begin German deliveries in spring of 2010 for approximately €115,000.
