Sensual purity as an expression of modern luxury.

Back in 1952, Mercedes-Benz introduced the iconic 300 S Coupe that quickly became a benchmark for luxury motoring, even garnering praise as being “a car for the world’s elite” by the automotive press. Since then, the German automaker has created a number of large luxury coupes that boasted a sophisticated design, advanced technology, and thundering engines. The new 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe is the latest in the elite line of large Mercedes-Benz coupes and makes quite a statement on the road.

The new 2015 Mercedes-Benz S550 Coupe encompasses the design philosophy of sensual purity as an expression of modern luxury. High-tech radiates through the design while smooth surfaces and contours create an emotional allure. All of the latest technology from the German automaker is also featured from the ground up such as the premiere of active curve tilting function, standard touchpad, heads-up display, and more. It even has Swarovski crystals in the headlights.

“As exclusive as it gets – the ultimate in aesthetic sportiness”, stresses Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management, Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars. “The breathtaking design of the Concept S-Class Coupe marked by sporty-classic proportions and sensual purity is transferred to the series-production S-Class Coupe virtually unaltered. The large coupe has always been the supreme pinnacle of our model range and that’s why it’s now called the ‘S-Class’ again.”

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe has the classic proportions of a big luxury coupe, with a long hood boasting sculpted lines and power domes, a low greenhouse with a high beltline, long wheelbase, and low profile.

“Our new S-Class Coupe is one of the most gorgeous coupes of all time, representing the most radical aesthetic departure from its predecessor,” says Gorden Wagener, Vice President Daimler AG. “The sensuous flowing silhouette in interplay with the clear progressive design language forms a perfect symbiosis and expresses our philosophy of sensual purity with pithy precision.”

Three clear lines run along each side of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe and emphasize speed, power, and class as they are reduced to the basics. The roofline slowly tapers towards the rear and flows gently into the rear fascia, creating a smooth and classic shape. A three-dimensional chrome frame surrounds the windows and does not incorporate a B-pillar to create a seamless design.

The front fascia of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe showcases the advanced technology featured throughout the vehicle. Rectangular, chrome-plated elements surround the three-dimensional radiator grille with three-pointed star. The new corporate design language of the LED headlights with daytime running lights acting as eyebrows are still featured, but this time the lighting system incorporates 47 Swarovski crystals, adding an exclusive touch to the big luxury coupe. A total of 17 angular Swarovski crystals are used in the flare-shaped DRLs, while 30 round-shaped crystals make up the turn signals.

The rear-end dramatically tapers and incorporates a number of new design features. A sleek trunklid sits atop a two-part rear bumper. The license plate was positioned low to allow for the sleek trunk and free-floating three-pointed star, flanked by the two-piece taillights with two horizontal rows of LEDs. A high-sheen black diffuser and silver look horizontal wing make up the lower-half of the bumper and add a touch of sport.

For the first time ever, the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe will feature the new curve tilting function that helps the car lean into corners much like a motorcycle rider for better handling and stability. The Active Body Control suspension forces the hydraulic struts to adjust force and lean up to an angle of 2.5-degrees in curves. The system constantly analyzes the road ahead by up to 49 feet using a stereo camera and is active at speeds from 19- to 12 mph. This function is paired up with all sorts of standard technology such as Pre-Safe brake with pedestrian detection, Distronic Plus with Steering Assist, BAS Plus with Cross-Traffic Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive High-beam Assist and Night View Assist Plus. Collision Prevention Assist Plus.

Inside, the same sensual purity design language is featured throughout through the usage of high-end materials and advanced technology. A two-part dashboard has a top layer that wraps around the cabin while the lower-half boasts a unique floating design. All of the lids, arm rests, and panels wear leather trimmings while the air vents, switches, belt extender rosette, and trim pieces are electroplated in “Silver Shadow”. Both the front and rear seats hold passengers tight with their sporty design and wear a coat of designo nappa leather with diamond backstitching patterns in colors such as Bengal red, saddle brown, and porcelain.

Technology is showcased throughout the cabin of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe and gives driver and passengers an added touch of luxury. A standard touchpad sits in front of the center arm rest and operates the heads-up display functions to be customized at the touch of a finger. The heads-up display displays a 480 x 240-pixel image using LEDs in an 8 x 3 in. display that appears to float about two meters above the hood to cut down on distractions. The display provides drivers with relevant information such as speed, navigation systems, and driving assistance systems that are in use.

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe will make its global debut at the 2014 Geneva International Motor Show from March 6th through 16th. The U.S. is set to receive the S550 Coupe model with deliveries beginning in the fall of 2014. Pricing has not been released.
