Girard-Perregaux Sea Hawk Pro 1000M – Wednesday Watch

Sea Hawk Pro 1000M

When you are considering dive watches, we admit that Girard-Perregaux (hereafter: GP) might not be your first thought. However, we also think that GP is one of the most underrated haute horlogerie brands there is. With their in-house movements (some with prestigious complications) they are an interesting choice for those who don’t care much about resale value or buying a brand with one of the lesser-known double names on the dial.

With that being said, we are taking a closer look at the Sea Hawk Pro 1000M by this brand from La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. The Sea Hawk has a long history in the collection of GP, with the current line dating back to 2002. The new GP Sea Hawk Pro 1000M is an exceptionally large watch with a crown located at 4 o’clock, and is designed for use in extreme conditions.

A large orange minute hand really contrasts the matt black dial, as well as the orange arrow tip on the small seconds hand. A power reserve sub-dial is located just above 6 o’clock, which we think looks sharp with the ‘WIND’ wording in there. The problem that we have with colored printing and hands is that you might get bored with it at some point. We do note that a large number of vintage diver watches also used this color setting and they haven’t lost popularity since.

Inside of this GP Sea Hawk Pro 1000M ticks an in-house GP033R0 movement. This is a mechanical movement with a power reserve of 46 hours, which is enough for a self-winding movement. This movement has no special complications except for the power reserve indicator.

The large 44mm watchcase safeguards this movement from dust and water, and the screw-down crown and case back provides extra insurance with respect to the water resistance of 1000 meters. This watch is being delivered on a rubber strap with a double folding clasp (butterfly system) and a diver’s extension system that comes in handy if you want to use the watch over your neoprene diving suit.

As with most other diver’s watches, the uni-directional bezel has an easy grip and embossed numerals located at the top. As written above, the crown is located on 4 o’clock, and just above the crown protector is the automatic helium valve that we’ve seen before on watches like the Rolex Sea-Dweller.

The price of the Girard-Perregaux Sea Hawk Pro 1000M is just below $9,000.- USD; a price tag which we think is steep for a stainless steel diving watch. But, given the fact that GP is a true manufacturer like Rolex (you have to compare this watch to the Deep Sea), it is fairly priced.
