H. Moser & Cie Mayu Timepieces – Watch Wednesday

In today’s watch world, where watches can’t seem to be big enough, materials aren’t high-tech enough and PR departments enjoy overflowing your inbox with promotional materials, it is nice to suddenly discover a watch that oozes calmness and peace of mind: the H. Moser & Cie’s Mayu.

Despite being familiar with the brand H. Moser & Cie, Motoring Exposure did not pay much attention to the Mayu series until last week. A local authorized H. Moser & Cie dealer has them on display and our attention was immediately drawn to the line.

An elegant timepiece, it is only 9.3mm thick and 38.8mm in diameter, which should be considered rather modest these days. All Mayu models have a centered hour and minute hand and a sub dial for the second hand at 6 o’clock. A large sub dial, as you’ve seen them on pocket watches of yesteryear.

Within its simple yet elegant 18ct gold, platinum or palladium watchcase, lies an impressive amount of technique. A double barrel makes sure you have up to 80 hours of power reserve, which comes in handy because this probably won’t be your every day timepiece. You don’t want to do gardening work or play with your kids wearing this beauty, do you?

An in-house caliber HMC321.503 hand wound movement fits the watch perfectly with its diameter of 32mm. The master watchmakers over at H. Moser & Cie developed an ingenious tooth system in wheel train and pinions, to optimize torque in the escapement module. The movement also displays the remaining power reserve using a needle. Of course, the wearer of the watch can only observe this by taking off his watch and looking through the sapphire case back.

All Mayu timepieces are delivered with a crocodile leather strap with a gold, platinum or palladium clasp.

Our personal favorite is the palladium model, with ‘fumé’ dial. Incredible!

Specifications of the palladium model are:

  • Moser movement Cal. HMC 325.503
  • Hand-wound with true bevel wheels
  • Min. 3-day power reserve
  • Moser tooth system in wheel train and pinions
  • Power reserve display on the movement side
  • Seconds stop function
  • Straumann double hairspring interchangeable escapement module
  • Pallet fork and escapement wheel made of hardened solid gold
  • Three-part, round case in palladium
  • Discreetly convex sapphire glass
  • See-through sapphire glass back
