Victorinox Infantry Vintage Chrono Mechanical – Wednesday Watch

Remember being a kid, when the one thing you really wanted was the red pocket knife with the Swiss cross on it? And if you were a kid from the late 1970s or early 1980s, then owning any one from the McGuyver series probably played the most important role in your pocket knife dreams! Those were the days when you could choose between Wenger or Victorinox knives. At least up until 2005, when Wenger became part of the Victorinox company.

Victorinox, most famous for the aforementioned Swiss army knives, is now famous for something else: The Infantry Vintage Chrono Mechanical line of watches. Two years ago, Victorinox introduced this watch with a rugged quartz movement and today, three different versions with a mechanical automatic chronograph movement are available.

These three options of the Victorinox Infantry Vintage Chrono Mechanical include:

– An SS 316L case with olive green dial, rubber strap version
– An SS 316L case with silver-white or black dial on a genuine black leather strap version
– A Black Ice® PVD case and strap, featuring a black dial version.

The Victorinox Infantry Vintage Chrono Mechanical features the world famous and most robust ETA/Valjoux 7750 chronograph movement in a stainless steel case of 44mm and is water resistant to 100 meters. A transparent case back has been fitted to view the mechanical movement at work.

The dial of the Infantry Vintage Chrono Mechanical watch has an impressive finish, and contains a telemeter scale inside. The telemeter scale on a chronograph watch is there to measure the distance of a phenomenon which is both visible and audible. Think of timing the distance between the observer (you) and a thunderstorm by first seeing the flash of the lightning and then hearing the sound of the thunder.

Here at MotoringExposure we think the Black Ice PVD version is most interesting, with its black dial, case and bracelet giving the watch this military look. Both the case and the bracelet are treated with PVD coating. Price of this Black Ice PVD version is US$1895 (retail), the stainless steel versions are priced at US$1695 each (retail).

Make sure to do your homework and browse the internet when the Infantry Vintage Chrono Mechanical watches hit the stores at the end of 2010, as there can be quite a difference between retail and on-line prices.

All Victorinox watches come with a three year limited warranty.
