Mazda is heading to SEMA with Two Awesome MX-5 Concepts

Mazda MX-5 Speedster Evolution Concept

Making the driver’s car even more appetizing.

There’s no question that the Mazda MX-5 is one of the driver’s choice for a bargain sports car. It’s lightweight, balanced, nimble, and just an utter joy to drive. The new MX-5 continued that success and now Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) is taking it to a new level with their MX-5 Speedster Evolution and MX-5 RF Kuro concept cars for the 2016 SEMA Show.

At the 2015 SEMA Show, Mazda introduced their MX-5 Speedster that had gone on a diet and featured a few special modifications. This year, that same idea has been taken to a new level with the MX-5 Speedster Evolution concept.

Painted in White Ether, the new Mazda MX-5 Speedster Evolution drops more than 100 lbs. compared to the first Speedster concept. With that drop in weight, the new Evolution concept model tips the scales at just under 2,000 lbs., making it approximately 350 lbs. lighter than the standard MX-5 soft-top model. That means better overall performance from handling to braking and everything in between.

Mazda MX-5 RF Kuro concept

Sitting alongside the featherweight is the Mazda MX-5 RF Kuro concept. Based on the 2017 MX-5 Retractable Fastback, this sports car wears a specially-developed semi-matte metallic “Kuro” paint that translates to “charcoal” from Japanese.

In addition to the striking pain, the Mazda MX-5 RF Kuro concept also features a new set of 7.5 x 17 RAYS forged wheels shod in 215/45 R17 BF Goodrich Rival G-Force tires for added grip. Handling is also boosted thanks to a new adjustable suspension borrowed from the Battery Tender Global MX-5 Cup Presented by BF Goodrich.

The two concept cars were designed and built in-house by the Mazda Design team in Irvine, CA to pay homage to the company’s performance heritage while creating a new “Mazda Premium” tier of personalized customization.

Both the Mazda MX-5 Speedster Evolution and MX-5 RF Kuro concept cars will be on display at the 2016 SEMA Show from November 1st to 4th at the Mazda booth, #11647 in the North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
