The scariest part of the 2012 race.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is one of the greatest races in the world. It’s filled with drama, excitement, disappointment, success, and danger. In the past, the race was very dangerous, resulting in the deaths of spectators and drivers alike due to crashes.

Today’s racecars are incredible safe and can withstand incredible forces, but that doesn’t mean they are 100 percent safe. Last year saw two horrific crashes by the Audi team and luckily both drivers did not suffer serious injuries. At the 2012 race, there was another horrific accident that had everyone holding their breath.

Coming down the straightaway well into triple-digit speeds, Anthony Davidson of the No. 8 Toyota TS030 Hybrid LMP1 was hit by Piergiuseppe Perazzini driving a GTE Am Ferrari 458 Italia. The hit caused Davidson and the Toyota to lose control, flip, go airborne and then land right-side up before it hit the wall at an incredible speed. The Ferrari crashed into the tire wall going sideways and landed on its roof after the impact. Luckily both drivers survived, with Davidson suffering a minor concussion and two broken vertebrae.

After the accident Davidson posted a few messages on his twitter to let everyone know that he was going to be OK.

“Well that was a big one! Lying in a French hospital with a broken back wasn’t what I had in mind at this stage in the race…”

“Feeling a bit sore today, but generally just happy to be alive! pic.twitter.com/QwsRGpyu”

Due to the tremendous amount of technology and development that all of the cars go receive today, both drivers were able to escape with their lives. Had that same accident occurred even ten years ago or earlier, it could’ve been a different outcome.
