Specialized Performance 2009 GT-R Tuning Exposed

What’s scarier than Godzilla? When he has 800+ horsepower of course!

Back in 1989 Nissan sent a R32 GT-R to Australian publication Wheels Magazine. There it was given the name “Godzilla on Wheels” due to its incredible performance. Since then the name has stuck with the car, imposing fear into its competition. But, for those like Specialized Performance, Godzilla’s atomic breath wasn’t potent enough.

The R35 is nothing new for the GT-R tuning experts at Specialized Performance. The company is best known for their complete tuning programs that upgrade everything from the fire-breathing 3.8-liter V-6 to the interior audio system. For one 2009 Nissan GT-R, Specialized Performance left nothing untouched as they carried out a complete tuning program for the all-wheel drive supercar.

For 2009, the Nissan GT-R boasted a 480 horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-6 engine that helped push the car to speeds of over 190 mph. Engineers at Specialized Performance have pushed the engine even farther with the help of HKS, Cobb, and Amuse products. The conversion started with the HKS GT800 kit that includes new turbochargers, heat-resistant materials, new oil and coolant piping, and a wastegate. New HKS downpipes, fuel system upgrades, engine internals, and an intercooler were also installed. Specialized performance replaced the stock injectors with bigger ID2000cc units, and fitted an Amuse titanium race pipe and R1000 exhaust system to reduce backpressure. After tuning all of the new components with a Cobb Accessport, the engine was dynoed at an astonishing 817 whp; almost double the stock output!

But, getting the 2009 GT-R to produce over 800 horsepower wasn’t the only goal. Specialized Performance also wanted to improve the handling of the car. This was accomplished by installing a new Amuse coilover sleeve kit that sharpened handling, and Endless brake lines and brake pads to provide even better stopping power. The R35 was also given a proper set of Specialized Performance SPEC12 Limited Edition wheels. Measuring 10 x 21 up front and a wide 11 x 21 at the rear, the stunning wheels are shod in 265/35/21 front and 305/30/21 rear Michelin rubber.

If you’re going to go fast, you should look good doing it, which is why the exterior was also modified with new OEM products and aftermarket carbon fiber components. Mines front and rear carbon fiber lip spoilers work to increase downforce while the carbon mirrors and grille cover provide a more aggressive look. Zele carbon fiber side skirts help to channel airflow around the car along with the Zele rear bumper. New Nissan OEM LED and fog lighting systems have been installed as well as a JDM Nissan side market light set to set the GT-R apart from its American counterparts.

Inside the beast is a custom interior with all the techno goodies and gadgets to make the driving experience more enjoyable. A set of Recaro ASM Ruby SR7 Limited seats were fitted along with a black alcantara headliner, custom carbon fiber steering wheel, center shifter plate, and subwoofer cover to create a more driver-oriented environment. And if the 3.8-liter R35 tuning doesn’t tickle your eardrums, Specialized Performance has installed a complete audio system that includes an Audison BitOne processor, Lrx 5.1 amplifier, Morel three-way front and rear speaker system with two nine-inch subwoofers in OEM enclosures, and a Kinetic high-current battery. To help Godzilla fly under the radar, a Valentine 1 custom-mounted radar system is used. The GT-R is also equipped with a front and rear camera system for convenience.

The Specialized Performance 2009 Nissan GT-R tuning program was a showcase of what the company is capable of producing. Individual accessories and kits are currently available from the aftermarket tuning company.
