Who will win the muscle car rivalry?

When the Big Three brought back the muscle car into their modern lineup, we knew that the horsepower wars were coming back…and boy were we excited!

Two of the biggest heavyweights on the market today are the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and the Ford Shelby Mustang GT500; two supercharged V-8s with massive amounts of horsepower and tire-shredding torque. Edmunds’ Inside Line took the two pony cars to the dyno to see who was actually putting down more power.

The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 that is rated at 580 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 556 pound-feet of torque at 4,200 RPM from the factory. The Shelby GT500 on the other hand comes with a supercharged 5.8-liter V-8 rated at 662 horsepower and 631 lb-ft. of torque.

But after a trip to the dyno, it was revealed that the Camaro ZL1 was putting down 497 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 497 lb-ft. of torque at 4,000 RPM while the Shelby GT500 put down 595 at 6,600 RPM and 603 lb-ft. at 3,900 RPM. While we all expected the Shelby to have more power than the ZL1, the results will continue to fuel the fire on each side in today’s muscle car wars.
