The BMW 435i ZHP Coupe is a Throwback Performance Special

A performance coupe for the everyday driving enthusiast.

Back in the early- to mid-2000s, BMW offered a special ZHP option package for the E46 3-Series models. By checking the ZHP box on the option sheet, drivers were spoiled with an array of upgraded components from the suspension to the engine, interior, and exterior. The car wasn’t on the same level as the M3, but it served up a lot more fun than your standard 3-Series model. It quickly became an enthusiast favorite and still commands a small premium today on the used car market.

BMW is bringing back the special ZHP package with the new BMW 435i ZHP Coupe. The special edition model will only be limited to 100 units, but it features all the M Performance goodies you could ask for including the Track Handling Package, BMW M Performance LSD, BMW M Performance Parts, and M Sport Package – all in the name of driving.

Optimizing the driving experience from the ground up is a tried-and-true formula that makes BMW’s the favorites among enthusiasts. With the BMW 435i ZHP Coupe, the Track Handling Package comes standard and include a set of Orbit Grey V-spoke wheels measuring 18-inches paired up with M Sport brakes utilizing four-piston front and two-piston rear calipers. The Adaptive M Suspension and Variable Sport Steering also come as part of the package.

The BMW 435i ZHP Coupe is capable of more grip and torque distribution thanks to the standard M Performance Limited Slip Differential. The LSD uses three clutch plates and offers 30-percent lockup under acceleration and 9-percent under deceleration. This helps greatly with corner exit speed and allows both wheels to get equal torque for improved traction. The new LSD also works with the BMW 435i ZHP’s DSC system.

The twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder engines also get a boost just like its E46 predecessor. An M Performance Power Kit includes new engine software and an M Performance Air Intake system to increase output by 35 horsepower and 32 lb-ft. of torque (auto) / 17 lb-ft. (manual) for a total of 355 horsepower and 332 lb-ft./317 lb-ft. That equates to faster acceleration with 0.2 seconds shaved off of the 0-60 mph time and 0.5 seconds off the 50 to 75 mph time.

But that isn’t all for the engine. The BMW 435i ZHP Coupe gains a more responsive throttle in Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ modes along with an exhaust “burble” in all three modes. The “burble” comes as a result of the new BMW M Performance Exhaust that reduces backpressure and cuts 8.8 lbs. of weight, ending with two brushed stainless steel tips. As part of the package, a new M Performance Engine Cover, Rocker Panel Decals, and Sport Display help to set the high-performance coupe apart from the pack.

The most important part of the BMW 435i ZHP lies under the skin, but the BMW M Performance Aerodynamics Package also plays a pretty substantial role. Carbon fiber front and rear spoilers help to reduce lift at both axles. A rear PUR-RIM diffuser with three embossed bars helps maintain stability at high speeds and wears a matte black grille. Side skirts visually lower the ride height of the BMW 435i ZHP Coupe and redirect air away from the rear wheels. A new pair of M Performance Black Kidney Grilles completes the more aggressive look of the sports car.

Inside, the M Sport Package offers those extra special touches that drivers desire. An Aluminum Hexagon Trim with high-gloss black accents add a Teutonic driving character. Facing drivers is an ergonomic M Sport steering wheel providing greater amounts of control for those high-performance situations.

The new 2016 BMW 435i ZHP Coupe will be strictly limited to just 100 units in either Alpine White or Black Sapphire Metallic with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearbox. Sales will commence in July at select BMW M Centers with pricing being released closer to the sell date. Customers that miss out on the limited-edition model will still be able to option their 4-Series models with the vast array of available BMW M Performance Parts sold individually as a VIA (Vehicle Distribution Center Installed Accessory).
