Porsche’s Special Black Edition 911 Exposed

The black beauty of the 911 stable.

Porsche has unveiled yet another special edition 911 model, bringing the total number of 911 variants to 22; and that’s not counting the limited-production 911 Sport Classic. But, dpon’t get us wrong; complaining about Porsche giving us more 911s is like getting angry that you just made another million dollars. Just what are we to do?!

The newest 911 from Stuttgart is a more affordable special edition, as it is based on the 911 Carrera Coupe and Cabriolet models and is available for a small premium. The base 911 Black Edition is wears a black exterior paint or customers can request a basalt black metallic as an option. For the 911 Carrera Cabriolet Black Edition, the cloth top is kept black to match the color scheme. Porsche has also fitted the new models with black 19-inch forged aluminum Turbo II wheels in a two-tone finish to complement the exterior color. Peering through the five double-spoke wheels are four-piston aluminum monoblock fixed calipers that are also painted black. Porsche has fitted a few body enhancements that aren’t black. The top of the windshield wears a subtle grey tint and the “911” badge at the rear is finished in contrasting chrome.

Inside the black theme continues. As passengers enter, they are greeted by stainless steel door entry guards sporting black “Black Edition” badges. Black partial leather seats come standard but can be upgraded by checking off the “leather interior” box on the options list. Much of the interior is colored – you guessed it – black. The gauge cluster and rear console wear the dark guise. Contrasting the black interior is a decorative dashboard molding, air vents, and console trim in aluminum look paint. A special 911 Black Edition badge adorns the glovebox displaying the model production number. Porsche also includes a three-spoke sports design steering wheel.

As part of the special 911 Black Edition, both the Coupe and Cabriolet variants receive a number of special features as standard. A BOSE 13-speaker (12-speaker Cabriolet) with active subwoofer and seven-channel digital amplifier has been specifically designed for the 911 Carrera interior and pumps out 385 Watts of audio bliss. Both models come with Porsche Communication Management (PCM), universal audio interface, and GPS navigation module. Standard Convenience amenities include cruise control, parking assistant, automatic anti-dazzle interior, exterior mirrors, and rain sensor.

In the performance department, the Black Edition doesn’t stray from the Carrera. Sitting at the rear axle is a 3.6-liter flat-six engine producing 345 horsepower at 6,500 RPM. Both the Coupe and Cabriolet can be fitted with either the six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch PDK transmissions, sending power to the rear wheels. Acceleration to 60 mph can be achieved in 4.9 seconds (Cabriolet with manual) or as quick as 4.5 seconds (Coupe with PDK). Equipping the Black Edition with the Sport Chrono Plus package further improves acceleration, reducing the 0-60 mph time to just 4.3 seconds with the Coupe and 4.5 seconds for the Cabriolet with PDK. In addition, customers can also upgrade their Black Edition with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), mechanical rear differential lock, and Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB).

The new Porsche 911 Black Edition Coupe and Cabriolet will go on sale in April of 2011. Pricing for the Black Edition Coupe will start at $81,300, while the Black Edition Cabriolet will start at $91,300. Tacking on the PDK transmission adds an additional $4,320 to the final price.
