Algorithmic artwork of speed, power, and beauty.

Automobiles have always been a canvas for not just designers, but painters, sculptors, and other artists to display their work in a unique way. Artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Robert Rauschenberg have all created one-of-a-kind masterpieces using automobiles as a work of art. Now, French Artist, Bernar Venet, has created a new piece of artwork using the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport as his canvas.

“A Bugatti is already a work of art in itself, one that transports both its beholder and its driver into new dimensions of reality. I realized how I could translate my passion for mathematical equations and scientific treatises into three-dimensional form,” said Venet. “My works are usually self-referential. So I found the idea of translating the equations of the Bugatti engineers onto the bodywork of the car very appealing. It was, so to speak, a logical conclusion and a new challenge in terms of the specific form of collaboration and implementation. To me, the result is also exceptional when measured by artistic standards and bestows the object with a mythical character.”

Bernar Venet had a different approach from the more traditional art cars with the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport. The front of the super car glows with a vibrant, dark orange that slowly breaks up to reveal numbers and characters used in a mathematical formula that calculates the incredible power output of the quad-turbocharged W-16 engine. This solution is showcased in much of Venet’s work and its self-referential character, and emphasizes the engineering and technology that’s featured in the French super car. The dark orange mathematical formula carries over into the cockpit of the Veyron Grand Sport where the door panels wear the same sequence of numbers and characters. A two-tone brown leather combination dominates the interior and a sculpture by Venet is featured at the rear console, similar to that of the Veyron L’Or Blanc. The final touch is his orange signature on the side of the center console.

“Our collaboration with Bernar Venet, one of the most demanding artists of our time, has led to creative impulses and inspiration that will continue to motivate us in the fields of concept and design. We are pleased that this collaboration has resulted in the creation of a significant, collectible work of art,” said Achim Anscheidt, Chief Designer at Bugatti. “The self-image of the Bugatti brand derives from an artistic identity that unites sketch, drawing, technical planning and realization into an intermedial whole. Bernar Venet doubly honors our brand by making reference to the technical formulae of our engineers without fully revealing their secrets. It is an homage to the principle of dialogue and to the human capacity to question and redefine established boundaries. Venet is always focused on the essentials and so is Bugatti.”

The Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport by Bernar Venet is a creative take on the speed, power, and engineering behind the super car. The new art car will be displayed at the Art Basel Miami Beach from December 6th through 9th at the Rubell Family Collection/Contemporary Arts Foundation.
