Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG Coupe

A smooth luxury bullet.

Mercedes-Benz is more than capable of building some ultra-luxury rocketships that love cruising at triple-digit speeds in comfort. The German automaker loves to drop that AMG hammer and the latest is a smooth luxury bullet. The Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG Coupe has it all: a hand-built V-8, tuned suspension, optimized aerodynamics, and exclusive interior hidden inside a sleek coupe design.

Part of what makes an AMG model so special is the “one man, one engine” philosophy that is employed by the German automaker. One man in the AMG workshop in Affalterbach, Germany builds the BlueDIRECT 5.5-liter, twin-turbocharged, V-8 engine that produces a thrilling 585 horsepower at 5,800 RPM and 664 lb-ft. of torque from 2,250 to 3,750 RPM. The mountain of power is sent through the seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT transmission to either the rear or all four wheels, as the Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG can now be had with the AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. As the automatically-adjustable AMG sports exhaust system with integrated valve flaps roars with its menacing V-8 sound, the S 63 AMG Coupe accelerates to 62 mph in 4.3 seconds with rear-wheel drive or 3.9 seconds in all-wheel drive form. Both drivetrains are locked into a 155 mph top speed.

“The new S 63 AMG Coupé is another exciting AMG dream car in the luxury segment. Now the S-Class Coupé also comes with the option of performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive – as we rigorously pursue our all-wheel-drive initiative,” said Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “Mercedes-AMG is putting the pedal to the metal again in the new year. Our model initiative is set to continue at blistering pace in 2014.”

Even with some added equipment to make the Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG Coupe faster and more nimble, the coupe is 143 lbs. lighter than its non-AMG sibling. The reduction comes thanks to a new lithium-ion battery, AMG forged alloy wheels, and body panels and front end constructed of aluminum. This equates to a power-to-weight ratio of just 7.51 lbs. / hp – an impressive figure for a large luxury coupe.

The new AMG 4MATIC performance-tuned all-wheel drive system is available for the first time, and sends 33-percent of torque to the front axle, while 67-percent goes to the rear. The 4MATIC-equipped S 63 AMG Coupe utilizes a full air suspension system while the rear-wheel drive variants get the high-tech Magic Body Control. Both luxury high-performance coupes get all sorts of AMG suspension goodies like new front-axle kinematics, anti-roll bar, stiffer subframe carrier at the rear, and higher camber.

The tuned suspension is combined with lightweight forged aluminum alloy wheels on the Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG Coupe. Multi-spoke titanium grey-finished forged wheels measuring 8.5 x 19 front and 9.5 x 19 at the rear come standard while optional AMG Performance Studio 8.5 x 20 and 9.5 x 20 ten-spoke forged wheels in titanium grey with a polished finish are also available and come with forged aluminum wheel bolt covers. Customers that want to stop on a dime can opt for the AMG ceramic high-performance brakes that are 20-percent lighter than the standard AMG high-performance composite brakes.

Performance is also the name of the game for the exterior of the Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG. The big coupe features a silver chrome AMG “twin-blade” grille with AMG badging. Below the grille sits a new three-piece A-wing and large black flics around the cooling ducts while a splitter helps generate downforce. The special “V8 BITURBO” badging sits along each of the front fenders and AMG side skirts with three-dimensional silver chrome inserts redirect air away from the rear wheels. The tapering rear-end features a high-gloss black diffuser insert with integrated chromed tailpipes helps optimize aerodynamics beneath the coupe while vertical air outlets help improve cooling for the rear brakes.

Inside, the Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG features all sorts of exclusive appointments. Electronically-adjustable AMG sport seats wear soft nappa leather with in an AMG V8 with contrasting piping and AMG badges on the backrests. The AMG logo is also worn by the armrest and center console in case the V-8 engine didn’t distinguish it enough. A three-spoke AMG steering wheel with perforated leather grip, metal AMG insert, and aluminum shift paddles gives the driver greater control while an AMG high-res TFT display with dual dials and red/silver needles stares ahead.
