Friday Fail: When Ferrari lives up to their Reputation

Friday Fail - Burning Ferrari

A footballer has a car-becue.

Ferraris have a reputation for being incredible performance cars and rightfully so, with their incredible background of racing and engineering. So much technology from racing is poured into each Ferrari model ensuring that they are at the top of the super car class.

But then there’s another thing that Ferraris, and Italian super cars in general, are known for: starting on fire! No matter how far removed from the 1970s and ‘80s when Italian cars were known being horribly unreliable leaders in performance, they still can’t seem to shake the whole fire-y stigma.

One of the latest examples of a burning Ferrari was experienced first-hand by Valencia CF football midfielder, Éver Banega. While driving his new Ferrari 360 Modena, Banega noticed flames in the rear-view mirror and immediately exited the car and called the fire department. Minutes later, officials were able to extinguish the fire, but the car that he had just purchased the previous Monday for close to € 80,000, was left in ashes.

Luckily, Banega was able to escape without any injuries, but his new Ferrari 360 Modena became the latest Italian super car to suffer the stereotypical death by fire. Officials are investigating the cause of the fire, but it is believed to have been the electrical system.

It’s going to take a long time for Ferrari and other Italian automakers to shake this reputation, especially after having to recall over 1,200 458 Italia models in 2010 for fire risks.
