New Brabus Widestar SLS AMG Exposed

Brabus unveils an SLS AMG with a rear-end that would make Sir Mix-A-Lot proud.

When Mercedes-Benz debuted the new SLS AMG, Brabus was one of the first tuning companies to introduce a complete program for the Gullwing supercar. But this was only the beginning for the German tuning giant, as a new widebody program is set to debut at the 2010 Essen Motor Show. The new program consists of new carbon fiber bodywork and aerodynamics, forged wheels, and custom-tailored interior, for an exclusive SLS experience.

The most arousing aspects of the entire tuning program are the new Brabus Widestar components for the rear of the SLS AMG. The rear widebody components add 20 mm to the rear track, improving the Gullwing’s handling and driving dynamics, and are made from high-strength carbon fiber. The sexy, sporty rear is further enhanced with a new spoiler and diffuser, each contributing to an increase in downforce at the rear axle. Up front, a new spoiler is fitted to the stock bumper for even more downforce, while new side sills seamlessly flow into the wider rear bodywork. At night, Brabus makes entering the SLS AMG an experience, with entrance lights integrated into the side sills and an illuminated Brabus logo on the air outlets of the front fenders.

The new, wider rear of the Brabus Widestar SLS AMG is complemented by a new suspension and staggered wheels. In cooperation with Bilstein, Brabus has developed a new adjustable suspension system for the Gullwing. Featuring a “Ride Control” function, drivers can chose a more comfortable ride than the stock suspension provides, lower the car by up to 30 mm, or change the damper settings for an even sportier ride than stock. Optionally, Brabus also offers stiffer front and rear sway bars for even better handling. The perfect stance is achieved by Brabus with new Monoblock F Platinum Edition forged wheels that provide a weight reduction of 12 percent over the stock wheels. Measuring 9.5J x 20 up front and 11J x 20 at the rear, the staggered wheels can be fitted with either Pirelli or Yokohama 275/30 ZR 20 front and 295/25 ZR21 rear high-performance tires.

The potent 6.2-liter V-8 packed behind the front axle of the Brabus Widestar SLS pumps out a blistering 563 horsepower. While Brabus is developing a complete engine tuning program (that we suspect it will produce some shocking horsepower numbers) owners can occupy themselves with a new exhaust system that lets out an exhilarating roar. Made from lightweight titanium, the exhaust weighs 26 pounds less than the stock unit and ends in four 84-mm tips. Drivers can switch between two modes: a “Coming Home” setting that is quieter than the stock exhaust and a “Sport” mode that unleashes the full fury of the 6.2-liter. The full exhaust system results in a modest 10 horsepower increase, bringing the total to 573 horsepower. The striking exhaust note will be sure to keep owners happy while Brabus develops a complete engine tuning program.

The interior of the Brabus Widestar SLS AMG is equally exclusive as the widebody exterior. Customers can choose from a number of different interior leather and Alcantara colors and designs, from the Brabus upholstery shop. The sporty nature of the Brabus Widestar SLS AMG is evident with the 400-km/h speedometer, sport steering wheel, carbon fiber trim, and anodized aluminum pedals.

The stunning Brabus Widestar SLS AMG will make its world debut at the 2010 Essen Motor Show. The tuning programs for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG will not stop here for Brabus, as the company has an engine tuning program in the works. We’ll be sure to keep you updated when the high-horsepower program is unveiled. Until then, have fun with the Brabus Widestar SLS AMG!
