Porsche’s Fourth 911 Speedster Exposed

Porsche 911 Speedster

The legendary name is revived for yet another 911 model.

It all started in 1953 with the launch of a new 356 variant, one that was aimed to provide a more pure driving experience with plastic windows, sport bucket seats, and a curved windscreen. After the most sough-after 356 model was discontinued, it wasn’t until 1988 that Porsche brought back the “Speedster” name with the 911, and introduced the double-bubbles that extended from the engine cover. In 1993/1994, the Speedster name was again revived for the 993-generation 911. The fourth, and latest return of the legendary name brings forth the sporty and thrilling driving character to the 997.2-generation 911 and ups the number of current 911-variants to an astonishing 21.

Keeping true to the Speedster name, the latest 911-variant will feature a number of unique aspects that sets itself apart from the rest of the lineup and add to the one-of-a-kind driving experience. Just like the first 356 Speedster, the new 911 Speedster will use a more raked windscreen. As with the other two 911 Speedsters, the new model uses the same double-bubble hardcover that extends from the engine cover. The athletic stance comes from the use of the 44 mm-wider track from the all-wheel drive Carrera 4 models along with a revised suspension that lowers the Speedster by 60 mm. Porsche has developed a “Pure Blue” paint specially for the Speedster, and contrasts the black surrounds of the headlights and windscreen, and tinted fog lights. The Speedster also receives exclusive side skirts, front apron, and rear apron create a more dynamic look.

Powering the Speedster is the 3.8-liter flat-six with 23 additional horses than the standard 3.8-liter found in the Carrera S. The revised engine sends 408 horsepower through the seven-speed dual-clutch PDK gearbox to the rear wheels. Coming standard on the Speedster for improved handling and driving dynamics, are Porsche’s Active Stability Management (PASM), Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB), and differential lock.

The interior of the Speedster continues with the exclusive accessories that set it apart from the rest of the 911 lineup. Almost all of the optional features available on the standard Carrera range come standard on the Speedster. The entire interior is hand-finished in black smooth leather that is contrasted by body-color details such as the dashboard and door trim. The adaptive sport seats wear body-colored leather side bolsters and checkered center sections.

The new Porsche Speedster will be unveiled by Matthias Müller, Porsche’s newest CEO on Thursday September 30th at the Paris Motor Show. Former CEO, Michael Macht, will hand over a Porsche steering wheel to Müller, symbolizing the transfer of responsibilities to the new CEO. Pricing for the Speedster will start at € 201,682 (+/- 275,000 USD) and be available in December of 2010.
