BMW Concept Gran Coupé Exposed

BMW breaks into the four-door coupé market.

Since Mercedes-Benz debuted the CLS, the four-door coupé segment has grown considerably with the introduction of models such as the Volkswagen CC, Aston Martin Rapide, and the upcoming Audi A7. To gain a market share of the sleek and stylish niche, BMW introduced the Concept Gran Coupé at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show.

The design of the Gran Coupé showcases the philosophy and values of BMW. Both dynamic driving performance and sophisticated styling are illustrated in the sleek coupé design. Classic BMW coupé design characteristics are also captured with the short front overhang, long wheelbase, and set-back greenhouse. The BMW Gran Coupé concept incorporates sports car performance and GT styling with four doors to create a beautiful and stimulating coupé.

At the front of the Gran Coupé is the iconic BMW kidney grille. The flat design of the grille along with the air inlets give the Coupé a wide appearance. Unlike past BMWs, the grille is separated from the headlights and air inlets. New LED headlights and fog lights give the Gran Coupé road presence. The striking features at the front have been designed to converge and form a curved figure.

The sleek silhouette of the Gran Coupé draws upon numerous BMW design characteristics. The long proportions are the result of a height of less than 1.40 meters and a gently tapering roofline. The stretched hood and shark nose at the front gives the Gran Coupé a classic BMW form. Frameless doors allow the design to flow without disruption to the C-pillar. At the C-pillar the classic Hofmeister Kink design element is used to highlight the rear wheel drive. New concept wheels feature relief milled spokes that extend towards the hub and contribute to the smooth lines of the Coupé.

The rear of the BMW Concept Gran Coupé portrays strength and elegance. New L-shaped LED taillights are complimented by the sculpted trunk lid, and give the Coupé a wide stance. The rear axle features flared fenders that emit an athletic confidence. The four-pipe dual exhaust takes on a unique shape to correspond with the rear’s smooth lines.

The four-door Gran Coupé portrays BMW’s innovative and dynamic design language. Since the debut of the concept, there has been speculation that the Gran Coupé will be produced as the new 8-Series. BMW however has not released any production plans for the Gran Coupé concept.
