Break out the plastic tracks! The Chevrolet Camaro Hot Wheels Edition is here!

Big kids can have toys too.

Hot Wheels are an integral part of every boy’s childhood. Collecting those special four-wheeled plastic and metal toys while rolling them down extravagant plastic tracks and humming engine sounds was one of the most enjoyable activities as a child – and still is for some of us (cough). Well General Motors and Mattel, Inc. have teamed up to create a Chevrolet Camaro Hot Wheels Edition for us big kids.

“It’s been nearly 20 years since I started designing cars for Hot Wheels and I have yet to drive one home,” said Felix Holst, Vice President of Creative for the Mattel Wheels Division. “Personally, I can’t wait to open the doors and see the Hot Wheels Camaro sitting in the garage.”

The new Hot Wheels Camaro is a vibrant, rear-wheel drive muscle car that’s 64-times bigger than its plastic counterpart and will be available in Coupe or Convertible variants in 2LT and 2SS trims. A unique Kinetic Blue metallic paint covers the entire exterior and is contrasted by a special matte black stripe that runs from the hood to the trunk and “blackout” graphic highlights around the taillights.

A number of visual components were borrowed from its supercharged Camaro ZL1 sibling including an upper grille to feed the engine with cool air and a rear spoiler for Coupe models. A special ground effects package with a black front splitter and pair of side skirts for better aerodynamic properties at high speeds. The Hot Wheels Camaro will feature unique flame graphics on each front fender and Hot Wheels logos on the front grille and rear trunklid. The finishing touch is a set of 21-inch five-spoke black wheels with a red outline stripe.

Three engines will be offered with the Chevrolet Camaro Hot Wheels Edition for both Coupe and Convertible variants. The LT models will be powered by LFX 3.6-liter V-6 engine with 323 horsepower at 6,800 RPM. The SS models are powered by either the L99 6.2-liter V-8 with 400 horsepower and 410 lb-ft. of torque on cars equipped with the automatic transmission while manual transmission models will utilize a more powerful LS3 6.2-liter V-8 with 426 horsepower and 420 lb-ft. of torque. All SS models with the manual transmission and LT models with the automatic or manual will can be optioned with a dual-mode exhaust system with variable exhaust noise depending on engine speed. Just like with the real Hot Wheels cars, we fully expect drivers to be humming engine noises behind the wheel.

But Chevrolet and Mattel, Inc. didn’t stop with just the exterior. The interior of the Hot Wheels Camaro was outfitted with special features as well as standard technology upgrades. The front seats wear “Hot Wheels” badges embroidered on the headrests and are covered with black leather with red and black stitching just like the rest of the cabin. A black instrument panel faces the driver while Hot Wheels flame decals are worn by the black-trimmed doors. Each floor features a set of premium floor mats trimmed in red with the Camaro logos and Hot Wheels Edition sill plates.

The new Chevrolet Camaro Hot Wheels Edition made its debut at SEMA and will be available on a limited basis in the first-quarter of 2013 and be the first time a full-size Hot Wheels car has been available by any automaker. The 1968 Camaro that was part of the original 16 Hot Wheels continues to be one of the most available toy cars to this day.
