The first showcase of the new McLaren Sports Series.
McLaren’s plan to conquer the sports- and supercar segments in the automotive world are coming to fruition. Their three-tier plan of performance-car domination starts with the Ultimate Series at the top, then the Super Series in between, and finished off by the new Sports Series. The first model in the latter tier to be introduced is the McLaren 570S Coupe – a mid-engined supercar that offers the automaker’s unique driving experience in a daily-driving package.
The foundation of the McLaren 570S Coupe starts with the carbon fiber MonoCell II chassis that has been designed to accommodate daily driving duties and allow for easier entry and exit for passengers. Weighing less than 176 lbs., the MonoCell II combines with aluminum body panels and other lightweight materials to achieve a superb dry weight of just 2,895 lbs.
The low overall weight of the McLaren 570S Coupe was the perfect starting point for the newest Sports Series model. The next step is the mid-mounted, twin-turbocharged V-8 engine. Named the M838TE, the 3.8-liter V-8 engine is based on the other high-performance engines in the McLaren range but features 30-percent new parts. A total of 570 PS (562 bhp) at 7,400 RPM and 443 lb-ft. of torque from 5,000 to 6,500 RPM is sent through the seven-speed SSG transmission to the rear wheels. This equates to an impressive 0-62 mph sprint of just 3.2 seconds while 124 mph is reached in only 9.5 ticks of the clock. Top speed is all the way back at 204 mph. What’s also impressive is that all this comes without a gas guzzler tax in the United States.
Of course, the McLaren 570S Coupe was designed for maximum driving enjoyment and dynamics. A newly-developed suspension setup uses independent active dampers paired up with anti-roll bars at both axles and dual-wishbones for nimble and precise handling. Carbon ceramic brakes come standard to bring the sports car to a halt with ease and are hidden behind a forged alloy wheels that can be had in a number of different designs. Ensuring that grip is never a problem are 255/35 R19 front and 285/35 R20 rear Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires.
The design of the McLaren 570S Coupe is distinct, dynamic, and graceful. The sports car wears a ‘shrinkwrapped’ form that was aerodynamically-optimized for maximum cooling and downforce with the new McLaren face that has been worn by the Super- and Ultimate Series cars that came prior.
The front of the McLaren 570S Coupe has a sharper face that is shared by the rest of the family, the design of which is shaped by air. Aero blades sit below the bumper to channel air beneath the bodywork while large ultra-bright LED headlights sit atop. A sculpted hood integrates into the front fenders and directs air towards the rear of the car, as side mirrors protrude from the doors. Dominating the sides of the McLaren 570S Coupe are dihedral-designed doors with a multi-dimensional shape that channels air into large intakes positioned inside the rear fenders. Atop the doors sits a hidden door button and intakes that are integrated into the bottom of the aerodynamically-shaped flying buttresses to help cool the engine.
The unique flying buttress design creates an aerodynamic teardrop design on the McLaren 570S Coupe. A special concave-shaped rear windshield helps to direct airflow as it moves over the rear, where it meets the exposed engine bay to create downforce as heat escapes. Curvaceous rear fenders are a part of a clean butt that features a fixed spoiler, complex rear diffuser with integrated dual exhaust outlets, LED light blade taillights, and aluminum mesh.
Just like the rest of the model lineup, the McLaren 570S Coupe has a driver-focused interior that is able to combine performance with everyday drivability. Leather is worn by the seats, dashboard, and steering wheel while customers will have a full range of customization including hand-picked combos by McLaren designers. The interior also boasts an extended storage space, giving the McLaren 570S Coupe the most usable space in the brand’s range.
In terms of technology, the McLaren 570S Coupe is packed with the good stuff. A full infotainment system with TFT digital instrument cluster changes depending on the driving mode (Normal, Sport, and Track). This is combined with a seven-inch IRIS touchscreen with integrated entertainment and climate functions positioned on the floating center console. If the 3.8-liter V-8 engine doesn’t provide the proper soundtrack, the standard McLaren Audio four-speaker system provides more than enough music without adding much weight. Customers can also opt for the McLaren Audio Plus eight-speaker Upgrade System or the Bowers & Wilkins 12-speaker Premium Audio System with 1,280-watt surround sound.
The new McLaren 570S Coupe will be on display as the first member of the Sports Series alongside the Super Series and Ultimate Series cars at the New York International Auto Show. Pricing and other details will be officially released at a later date.
