Swapping Porsche’s flat-six for a V-8? Blasphemy!
The history of the RUF RGT-8 began a decade ago with the 996, the first generation of 911 to feature water-cooled engines instead of the famous air-cooled models. The first-ever RGT featured a GT3 motor with an air-cooled 3.6 crankcase, and was tuned to 385 brake horsepower. When the 997 was introduced in 2004 RUF created the second RGT, a track-focused 911 with 445 brake horsepower. The latest generation RGT, the RGT-8, takes the 911 to new level of performance by replacing the legendary flat-six engine with a RUF-designed V-8.
The new V-8 owes much of its design to Reinhard Könneker, a seasoned engineer who has worked on Formula 1, Class C, and DTM engine projects. Könneker played a large role as consultant and leader during the engine’s development. A new 180° “Flatcrank”crankshaft was used for better balance and allow the engine to reach higher RPMs. The compact 4.5-liter V-8 weighs in at less than 200 kg (441 lbs.). Dry sump lubrication is also used to allow for a lower mounting point and to ensure engine lubrication under intense lateral acceleration. The race-inspired V-8 pumps out a raw 550 brake horsepower at a screaming 8,500 RPM and 368 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox – no PDK here.
New bodywork has been fitted to the Ruf RGT-8 for optimum aerodynamics. At the rear, a new carbon fiber spoiler has been equipped for increased downforce. To shed weight, RUF has fitted aluminum doors and front hood. Optionally, customers can order a Frère package that includes new front fenders, nose, and unique dashboard components. Named after Belgian race driver Paul Frère, the package emulates the styling from the 550 Coupé driven by Frère to win the best in class at the 1953 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Rounding off the exterior are a set of center-locking RUF forged alloy wheels. The 19-inch wheels measure 9Jx19 at the front and 12Jx19 at the rear and wear Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires for enhanced grip. RUF also fitted a new high performance brake system that utilizes perforated ceramic discs for fade-free braking.
Inside, RUF has fitted a number of new components to give the RGT-8 a unique feel. For added safety and chassis stability, a roll cage has been installed. New front bucket seats shed weight and provide superb lateral support. Along with the optional Frère package dashboard components, a new steering wheel and pedals add a racing feel to the RGT-8.
Production for the Ruf RGT-8 is set to start in 2011. Pricing has not been released.
