The Track-Ready Tuningwerk BMW 1M RS

Tuningwerk 1M RS

Built to race.

The BMW 1 Series M Coupe has been called the “spiritual successor to the e30 M3” for quite some time. The e30 M3 was very successful in motorsports around the world, so why not make a racing version of the new 1 Series M Coupe, right? After all, it is the successor to the original M3.

Tuningwerk, the BMW specialists in Germany, decided to do just that and transformed the 1 Series M Coupe into the 1M RS. The new model is a track-ready sports car that boasts over 500 horsepower, a dynamic suspension, and lightweight modifications that make it a potent track toy.

The exterior of the 1M RS is designed to add downforce at high speeds without increasing the overall weight. Much of the new body work is made from carbon fiber for even better performance. The front features a carbon fiber GT4 lip and engine hood that helps dissipate heat. The trunk lid at the rear was replaced with a carbon fiber unit and fitted with a large spoiler for better handling. As an option, Tuningwerk can install carbon fiber doors and plastic side glass to reduce weight even further.

The chassis was also upgraded for performance. The stock suspension was modified with 3-X Clubsport running gear and can be complemented with H&R lightweight stabilizers. Coming standard on the 1M RS are Mov’it steel brakes with 370 mm discs or customers can opt for the powerful 380 carbon ceramic discs. Hiding the potent brake system from view are ATS superlight forged wheels in a 9 x 19 front and 10 x 19 rear fitment with 245/35 R19 and 285/30 R19 Dunlop SportMaxx tires for improved grip. As an option, customers can order ATS FlowForming Crosslight wheels.

The 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline-six of the 1 Series M Coupe has been extensively modified by Tuningwerk. The entire cooling system was upgraded so that the 1M RS could operate at its limits reliably for an extended period of time. A new racing clutch was installed along with a Drexler differential, full exhaust system, tuned ECU, and either 3.25 or 3.45 rear gearing. After all the Tuningwerk upgrades, the 1M RS can produce 521 horsepower and 453 lb-ft. of torque from 2,800 RPM while accelerating to a top speed of 186 mph.

The Tuningwerk 1M RS is currently available for 119,000 Euros as a complete car and tuning program. Customers have the option to install a number of different upgrades to suit their needs with the car.
