Friday FAIL: Where your 300SL Gullwing goes for a Roll

Mercedes SL300 Gullwing Crash

That’ll buff right out.

You’re one of 1,400 people that actually own one of the legendary Mercedes-Benz SL300 Gullwing models. Driving it is pure joy and you’d like to keep it in pristine condition to preserve a piece of automotive history. You go as far as to find a specialty shop that deals just with Mercedes-Benz models to ensure that your 300SL Gullwing is cared for and taken care of properly. Then, you find out that the mechanic rolled the car going around a turn and now your Gullwing is a mess of twisted and torn sheetmetal.

Well, that’s exactly what happened in Pleidelsheim, Germany to one owner of a Mercedes-Benz SL300 Gullwing. The car was being test driven by one of the 26-year old mechanics with a 19-year old apprentice in the passenger seat when they went around a curve and lost control, causing the vintage car to roll over and endure a great deal of damage. How much damage? How about 650,000 Euros (approx. $830,000)! Peter Widenhorn, spokesman for the police department Ludwigsburg said “There the speed of 80 k / h is required, which was not observed obviously.”

The workshop thankfully has insurance to protect against accidents such as these, but it’s something that is very hard to see. Imagine being the owner and receiving the phone call about how your SL300 Gullwing was just in an awful accident. Surprisingly, the owner was calm about the situation and was thankful that insurance would cover the damage.

Thankfully both the mechanic and the apprentice were unharmed in the accident, but we’re going to stamp a big FAIL on them.
