M178 AMG 4.0 Biturbo V-8

The Mercedes-AMG GT is looking pretty serious.

For quite some time, the naturally-aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 engine ruled the Mercedes-Benz AMG model family with its brutal way of going about its tire-shredding business. Then, a new family of biturbo V-8s started to show up to do the same job, but some of them are about to be replaced by the new 4.0-liter Biturbo AMG V-8.

The new M178 twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine hand-built by AMG uses a great deal of the company’s motorsports experience to provide an incredible amount of power in a more efficient package.

A bunch of new and innovative technologies found their way into the new M178. The two turbochargers are positioned between each of the cylinder banks and the piping was made compact for better throttle response and a reduced lag time. Everything from the nano-slide coated cylinder walls to flow-optimized cylinder heads with zirconium alloy was designed for maximum performance and durability. The front mid-mounted engine even sits 55 mm lower thanks to the dry-sump lubrication system for better weight distribution and a lower center of gravity. The new engine will have the ability to produce 503 horsepower at 6,250 RPM and 479 lb-ft. of torque.

The new M178 4.0 AMG V-8 engine will be featured in the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT sports car. Get ready for some serious power from Affalterbach.
