A new Gallardo to take the checkered flag.

Over the past few years, Lamborghini has dedicated more time, effort, money, and research into racing. After all, motorsports is the best way to gain knowledge and technical know-how that translates to building better performance cars for the street. The Italian automaker has sponsored racing series and created a number of Gallardo race cars, but has now taken another step towards taking the checkered flag by partnering with Reiter Engineering and developing a new Gallardo GT3 FL2 race car.

Although Lamborghini is an Italian company, some of its roots go back to Germany (owned by Volkswagen). Now, it’s bringing in a German motorsports company that specializes in Lamborghini race cars to create the new Gallardo GT3 FL2 and work alongside Lamborghini’s R&D Motorsport department. Reiter has been quite successful in racing while building its own Lamborghini GT racers since 2000, and achieving 199 victories and 350 podiums in GT Championships since 2007.

The new Lamborghini Gallardo GT3 FL2 by Reiter Engineering was designed to be a long-distance endurance racer. The race car weighs in at 25 kg (55 lbs.) less than the previous-generation Gallardo GT3 and also boasts a better power-to-weight ratio. The aerodynamic body was designed for maximum efficiency and cooling, and includes a new front splitter, carbon fiber rear diffuser, and adjustable rear spoiler. New “24 Hour” brakes will offer teams a durable solution for endurance racing and help improve overall reliability.

“We are delighted to announce a minimum five-year agreement with Reiter Engineering as our exclusive development and supply partner for Lamborghini GT3 cars, based on Reiter’s strong engineering skills, passion for and understanding of the Lamborghini brand and, of course, obvious racing success,” said Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini. “We are committed to supporting racing in Europe and Asia in 2013 with expansion into the USA in 2014: GT3 racing, together with our highly successful mono marque Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo series in Europe, Asia and this year the USA, are a clear fit with the Lamborghini brand, where we take the prowess of our super sports cars from the road to the track.”

The new Lamborghini Gallardo GT3 FL2 by Reiter Engineering will compete in worldwide racing series such as the Blancpain Endurance Series, Asia Le Mans Series, and Italian GT3 Championship. Deliveries will start for teams in Europe and Asia in March of 2013 and retail for 320,000 Euros plus taxes.
