A perfect mix of big-displacement power and German refinement.

The pinnacle of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe is here and it has a thundering bi-turbo V-12 sitting beneath its hood. Back in March, Mercedes-Benz unveiled their S 63 AMG Coupe with its exclusive AMG appointments and powerful 585-horsepower V-8 engine. That was all fine and dandy, but we all knew that the big, exclusive two-door version of the S-Class was going to be getting the massive V-12 and the S 65 AMG badge soon. It just had to.

Well, now the Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG Coupe is here and it has all the exclusivity, superb comfort, and incredible performance that sets it apart from the pack. “There are AMG fans for whom our V12 biturbo engine is the measure of all things. For this clientele we have developed a unique car in the form of the new S 65 AMG Coupé. From driving dynamics to comfort and equipment – our new twelve-cylinder coupé surpasses even the highest of expectations,” said Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management at Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

The S 65 AMG Coupe is the fourth high-performance AMG model with a V-12 engine. It’s 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V-12 engine wears a carbon fiber and aluminum engine cover that hints at the power that lies beneath. Output is pegged at 630 horsepower from 4,800 to 5,400 RPM and 738 lb-ft. of torque from 2,300 RPM and 4,300 RPM that returns an impressive 23.7 mpg NEDC combined and meets EU6 emissions standards. The same “one man, one engine” philosophy remains the same as each engine is produced by one technician in Affalterbach and bears their signature on the engine plate.

That incredible amount of power is sent through the AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic transmission to the rear wheels. Three modes are available: Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S), and Manual (M), with the former activating the stop-start function. The quick-shifting capabilities enable the Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG Coupe to reach 62 mph in just 4.1 seconds and hit an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph.

The chassis of the Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG Coupe is designed for comfortable driving pleasure and performance. The Active Body Control (ABC), Magic Body Control, and Road Surface Scan all work together to continuously monitor the road ahead and instantly alter the electronically-controlled suspension to lean into bends like a skier to maintain comfort and control, especially on winding country roads. Drivers also benefit from an electromechanical speed-sensitive sports steering setup that alters the feel and assistance of the steering system depending on the driving mode and other factors. Helping to make the S 65 AMG Coupe more nimble is a new lightweight lithium-ion battery that eliminates the starter and backup batteries to cut 20 kg (44 lbs.) of weight.

Below the body sit striking new multi-spoke forged wheels and some powerful brake options. The 8.5 x 20 front and 9.5 x 20 rear forged wheels wear 255/40 R20 and 285/35 R20 tires along with a special finish. The ceramically-polished high-sheen AMG forged wheels go through a unique process that starts out with them being polished and then manually grinded. Two more polishing stages with different pellets help to create a deep sheen before then are given the final treatment and are sealed with a clear varnish. A new screw-on wheel bolt cover gives each wheel a center-locking look and finishes the fitment. Behind the forged wheels sit standard high-performance brake calipers with grey calipers or optional red calipers. For the more performance-minded customer, the Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG Coupe can be outfitted with AMG ceramic high-performance composite brakes that reduce weight, fade, and improve stopping power.

Chrome is the name of the game with the exterior of the Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG Coupe. Numerous design elements such as the central Mercedes-Benz star, radiator grille, intakes, side skirts, and rear elements wear a sharp chrome finish. New front air flics, and a front splitter help to reduce lift up front and improve stability. Each fender proudly wears a “V12 Biturbo” badge to showcase its power. At the rear sits an AMG sports exhaust system with two chromed tailpipes along with a diffuser insert.

Inside, the Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG Coupe has all sorts of exclusive options that set it apart from the rest of the lineup along with some high-tech goodies. The sport seats are designed for long-distance comfort and support and wear design AMG Exclusive nappa leather with diamond stitching, delineated perforations, and AMG badges. Nappa leather also adorns the roof, dashboard, door panels, and roof grab handles. Illuminated AMG door sill panels greet passengers as the open the big doors of the Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG Coupe.

Drivers benefit from a three-spoke sports steering wheel with shift paddles and an AMG instrument cluster that measures 31.2 cm and features a high-res TFT color display. Red and silver needles and “V12 Biturbo” lettering add that extra special touch. A heads-up display and touchpad displays relevant information directly on the windshield to benefit the driver and can be easily controlled through the touchpad.

The new Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG Coupe will be the top-model in the S-Class line and offer up a certain exclusivity in the model lineup. Pricing and the official production dates have not been released.
