The BMW 2002 Hommage Celebrates 50 Years

BMW 2002 Hommage

From 2002 Turbo to Today.

In 1966, BMW launched the first 02-Series that formed the basis for the first, iconic 3-Series in 1975. One of the most iconic and notable models in that series line was the BMW 2002 turbo – a car that made a name for itself as the first series-produced turbocharged car and as an incredible performer on and off the track.

Fifty years later, the German automaker celebrated the 02-Series’ heritage at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este with the BMW 2002 Hommage design study. The newest design concept takes the classic language of the 2002 turbo and 02-Series models, and presents them with a present and future twist.

“Exactly 50 years ago, the 02 range kick-started an era of success for BMW. This compact coupe is one of the vehicles which made the brand what it is today,” explains Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “The 2002 sat at the top of the range and was the first series-produced car anywhere in Europe to come with turbo technology. That set the seal on the coupe as a genuine sports car. At the same time, the 2002 turbo was at the technological vanguard of engine development at BMW. The BMW 2002 Hommage is our way of raising a glass to all these achievements.”

The formula for the BMW 2002 Hommage is simple yet has stood the test of time: compact proportions, long wheelbase, short overhangs, and the iconic “shark nose”. The upper and lower parts of the car are divided by a carbon fiber strip that runs from the hood and around the shoulders to the rear. The minimalist upper portion wears a smooth matte paint finish to reduce the sun’s reflection while more complex design elements sit beneath in the lower section wearing high-gloss paint. A unique Space Race Metal paint covers the entire vehicle with its light metallic blue hue changing from bright fluorescent blue to grey depending on the reflecting light.

Four powerful wheel arches extend outwards on the BMW 2002 Hommage similar to the bolted units that were worn by the homologated 2002 turbo. Striking 20-inch bi-color wheels with a multi-dimensional design pay homage to classic racing wheels while gold-painted brake calipers shine through.

The front of the BMW 2002 Hommage boasts an intimidating and confident stare that brings a classic character into the 21st century. The wide track and low-slung body create an athletic stance with a “spear” contour on the hood pointing ahead. The classic BMW kidney grille features wide, black double-bars flanked by two single headlights with gold reflectors for the 50th anniversary. Sculpted air intakes lie on each side of the bumper while a central lower intake sucks air into the engine bay above the spoiler lip. Classic ‘turbo’ lettering on the front fascia, apron, and driver’s side mirror recall that performance-oriented icon.

Sculpted lines incorporate air outlets on the front fenders and door as they run towards the rear of the BMW 2002 Hommage and mirror the carbon shoulder line. The rear is clean and purposeful while incorporating the carbon division separating top and bottom of the design concept. Above sits a smooth spoiler lip while air outlets create the rectangular-shaped taillights with black-panel glass covers. The BMW logo is worn to the right of the license plate, just like the classic 02-Series models. Below, a new carbon fiber diffuser channels air and incorporates the quad exhaust outlets. As another tribute to the racing nature of the 2002 turbo, an exposed red tow hook sits above the driver’s side tailpipes.

While the BMW 2002 Hommage won’t see production, it displays the next stage of design language that will be shown on future BMW models in the years to come – and that’s something to get excited about.
